Job description

Join the HydGene Renewables Engineering Team!

HydGene Renewables Pty Ltd is a deep tech start-up revolutionising the production of green hydrogen. Utilising a bio-engineered biocatalyst platform, we convert waste biomass into hydrogen, offering a sustainable and efficient alternative to traditional hydrogen production methods. Founded in 2020 and spun out of Macquarie University by Dr. Louise Brown (CEO), Prof. Robert Willows (CSO), and Dr. Kerstin Petroll (CTO), HydGene is at the forefront of climate tech innovation.

HydGene’s Approach

At HydGene, we employ a proprietary biocatalytic platform technology to convert renewable plant-based feedstocks and waste biomass into green molecules, such as hydrogen and ammonia. Traditionally, the production of these high-volume but low-value molecules has been economically impractical using biological methods. By harnessing Synthetic Biology tools, we have developed a ground-breaking, stable, and long-lasting biocatalyst that enables efficient and cost-effective manufacturing of hydrogen. This approach aligns with the resource-efficient principles of a true circular economy, making biomass-to-green molecule conversion both economically viable and sustainable.

The Role

As a Production Engineer / Bioprocess Operator at HydGene Renewables, you will be at the forefront of innovation and sustainability, playing a crucial role in building and operating Australia’s first biohydrogen pilot plant. You will work closely with our growing Engineering team and collaborate with other engineers and scientists to drive our mission forward.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate a variety of process equipment, including macerators, filtration equipment, hydrolysis reactors, and more.
  • Monitor various process parameters (temperature, pH, flow rates, etc.) and collect/analyse process data, including sample preparation and analysis.
  • Conduct experiments using pilot-scale process equipment to optimise engineering design for future larger-scale plants.
  • Utilise your operational knowledge to provide engineering design improvements and upgrades for the pilot plant over time.
  • Maintain utilities such as compressed air, steam, and power to ensure continuous operation of the pilot plant and other site equipment.
  • Address and resolve issues as they arise, including sourcing new fittings, fixing leaks, modifying process equipment, and finding ways to enhance plant operations.

What We Are Looking For

  • Engineering or Trades Background: An engineering degree or trade certificate is ideal. The candidate needs to be hands-on, willing to operate process equipment, use tools, find solutions, and build them.
  • Experience: Prior experience operating process equipment, creating SOPs, quality control, and experimental design is a plus, but training will be provided if needed.
  • Commitment to Safety: A strong commitment to process safety to protect yourself and others from harm is essential.
  • Ownership and Responsibility: Someone who can work towards eventually taking full ownership of the pilot plant’s operation.
  • Communication Skills & Attention to Detail: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams. Meticulous in monitoring process parameters and maintaining accurate records.
  • Desirable: drivers license and ability to travel.

About You

You are a highly collaborative individual who efficiently utilises time and resources to accomplish tasks. You thrive in an innovative, fast-paced, and rapidly changing environment. You consistently demonstrate a strong sense of integrity and strive for excellence in your work and conduct. You actively support workplace diversity and have a passion for tackling climate-related challenges that bring about significant impacts. Your enthusiasm and dedication to contribute to the company's growth and mission make you stand out.

Why Join Us?
