Our Food Environments Team, situated within ECU’s Nutrition & Health Innovation Research Institute, is at the forefront of pioneering research aimed at understanding the influence of children's environments on their dietary habits and the risk of overweight and obesity. We are dedicated to creating healthy community, school, and consumer food environments by ensuring equitable access, availability, and affordability of healthier foods and beverages. Our mission extends to reducing the availability and marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages in the places where children live, play, eat, and go to school.Through collaborative efforts with State and Local Governments, key health agencies, urban planners, and urban designers, our research provides essential evidence supporting policy and practice changes. Our ultimate goal is to cultivate equitable, health-promoting communities that encourage healthy eating habits.The Opportunity:
Position: Project ManagerProject: Pioneering a national ‘Food Atlas’ to map, measure and monitor food access across Australia.Our Food Environments Team is looking for an experienced Project Manager to spearhead our pioneering ‘Food Atlas’ project. This project represents a groundbreaking endeavour in Australia, offering a comprehensive assessment of food access nationwide. It intersects the fields of nutrition, public health, geography, and urban planning to produce a tool vital for professionals involved in food policy, public health, and planning.Our NHMRC-funded ‘Food Atlas’ project aims to spatially depict community access to food, pinpointing areas with scarce healthy food retail options or an excess of unhealthy choices. This critical data will guide national, state and local governments in food and nutrition policy making, support planning decisions, and direct future policies towards cultivating equitable, health-promoting communities.This position reports to the Head of the Food Environments team and will be well supported within the research team.Key Responsibilities:
  • Project delivery: Ensure the project's objectives are achieved on time and within budget.
  • Project governance: Establish and uphold robust project governance frameworks to ensure transparent decision-making, accountability, and effective management of project resources and risks.
  • Stakeholder management: Lead stakeholder engagement and foster robust relationships with key partners, including -local and state governments.
  • Database management: Develop and maintain a comprehensive stakeholder database to streamline communication, enhance engagement, and facilitate the efficient sharing of information and feedback.
  • Team leadership: Manage project staff to handle data effectively, ensuring it is accurately sourced, managed, analysed, and applied.
  • Innovation and outreach: Guide the development, launch, and evaluation of the ‘Food Atlas’. This includes facilitating workshops and presentations for local and state governments and other user-groups and gathering feedback to enhance its functionality and relevance.
  • Reporting and guidance: Prepare and distribute food access reports for governments and develop guidance materials to help them interpret and act on this data to inform public health planning and actions.
  • Other duties: Perform additional duties as required to support the team's goals.
This role is pivotal in bridging critical research with actionable insights, making a tangible impact on community health and nutrition policies.Role Requirements:
  • Educational background: Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Nutrition, Urban Planning, Geography, or a related field. A Postgraduate degree is preferred.
  • Experience: Proven track record of successful project management, preferably in nutrition public health, urban planning, government or a related sector. Experience in public speaking, stakeholder engagement, project governance, and database management is essential.
  • Technical skills: Familiarity with project management software and tools.
  • Communication: Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders across various levels as well as engage with the media.
  • Leadership: Strong leadership capabilities with experience managing large projects and multidisciplinary teams to achieve project objectives.
  • Analytical thinking: Ability to analyse complex data and translate it into actionable insights and strategies.
  • Adaptability: Flexible and adaptable approach to managing project challenges and changing priorities.
  • Commitment: Dedicated to the vision of creating healthier food environments through evidence-based policies and practices.
Benefits & Remuneration
This full time, fixed term position attracts remuneration of $111,152 to $125,191 plus 17% University Superannuation contribution.ECU supports a work/life balance for staff.
