Tresillian is currently recruiting an experienced Mental Health Clinician to our Parent, Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Service Northern Outreach role which provides care during business hours. 

The Mental Health Clinician provides culturally appropriate, comprehensive and wholistic mental health care to parent-infant/child dyads and triads receiving a Tresillian parenting service. The role requires expertise in the clinical assessment, formulation and treatment of perinatal and infant mental health concerns, with a focus on parent-infant dyad/triad and wider family functioning, applying trauma-informed care principles. The Mental Health Clinician undertakes risk assessments and develops safety plans, including when thoughts to harm self or the child are present, and when child protection concerns exist, or domestic violence is present. The Mental Health Clinician facilitates group programs to support parent, infant and young children’s functioning, secure attachment and positive mental health and wellbeing. 

The Mental Health Clinician engages in: joint work with the multidisciplinary team; formal and informal consultation, and; evaluation and planning for future directions in service delivery and in staff support.  The Mental Health Clinician works within the Parent, Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health (PIEC-MH) Team, performing case management tasks while collaborating closely with other Tresillian clinicians to support families to meet their goals so that every child has the best possible start in life. 

The Royal Society for the Welfare of Mothers and Babies, trading as Tresillian, was formed in 1918 to coordinate early child and maternal health care services in New South Wales (NSW). Tresillian is now the largest early child and family health and parenting service in Australia, operating from four sites in metropolitan Sydney and numerous regional and rural sites supporting service provision to families across NSW, Victoria and ACT.

Selection Criteria – Applicants must address the Selection Criteria 

  • Qualifications in accordance with relevant award conditions and eligible for membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) or the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). 

Psychologists and Clinical Psychologists: registration with AHPRA; for Clinical Psychologists: an endorsement in the practice area of Clinical Psychology, or enrolment in an approved registrar program working towards endorsement as a Clinical Psychologist.

Social Worker: Eligible for membership with the Australian Association of Social Work and for Mental Health Accreditation. 

Registered Nurse/Midwife and Occupational Therapist: Registration with AHPRA and additional qualifications in mental health studies, preferably with a focus on the perinatal and/or infant and early childhood domain.

  • At least 3 years of clinical experience in perinatal mental health practice and demonstrated clinical experience in:
  • The assessment and management of perinatal mental illness, including (but not limited to) postnatal depression and anxiety. 
  • Individual, family and group therapies, 
  • Attachment-based practice with parent-infant dyads and triads. 
  • Infant mental health assessment and management.
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and apply advanced reasoning skills and independent professional judgement when dealing with complex situations.
  • Excellent time management skills, including juggling face to face client work, completing documentation in a timely manner, and competent, independent skills using software programs such as Word, Excel, Teams and Outlook, PDF reader and client database systems. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to reflective practice, positive interpersonal skills, and ability to manage conflict.
