Negative Vetting 1 (NV1) security clearance can be considered for this opportunityTHE OPPORTUNITYDue to the retirement of the incumbent, Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) is seeking the assistance of a Quality Specialist to maintain its Chemical Agents Analysis Facility testing activities compliance with ISO/IEC 17025. This is an existing contract for full-time work performed at DSTG Melbourne, which is located in Fishermans Bend, and that has extensions until the end of October 2026.The person in this role will actively assist the Department of Defence in maintaining part of its NATA Scope of Accreditation by conducting internal audits. Ultimately, this contract position has responsibility for administering and reporting on the quality management system (QMS) to ensure continued compliance with all accreditation requirements.OUR CLIENTDSTG’s Chemical Defence S&T Capability operates Australia's only OPCW designated laboratory for the verification of chemical warfare agents. Maintaining this unique capability requires strict quality control procedures to ensure accountability and credibility of the laboratory’s analytical results. DSTG's accreditation to the National Association and Testing Authorities (NATA) under ISO 17025 is used to reaffirm its adherence to best laboratory practice.Understandably, the nature of this work necessitates the appointed person be an Australian citizen who possesses an NV1 security clearance or shall be eligible to go through the vetting process needed to obtain and maintain this credential. More information on this shall be provided to applicants.DSTG acts as the host employer and takes responsibility for the day-to-day direction of the person in the Quality Specialist role.THE ROLEYou will work as part of a team that provides advice, support, and training to two groups of analytical chemists-ensuring their laboratory complies with NATA accreditation requirements. The role of the Quality Specialist is to advise on and conduct quality assurance, governance, auditing, and other related activities.Here are some of the activities that this job will involve:
- Advise, train, and update all lab users on matters relating to the Quality System
- Maintain document control processes and the sufficiency of recordkeeping
- Monitor the compliance status of instrumentation (weekly/monthly)
- Ensure that calibrations of laboratory equipment comply with documented acceptance criteria
- Facilitate scheduled servicing under all existing service agreements with vendors (monthly)
- Coordinate within DSTG Melbourne staff to hold the annual management review
- Liaise with NATA on all activities covered by the facility’s scope of accreditation
- Tertiary qualification in science, ideally chemistry or relevant experience within a testing laboratory
- Knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025 and NATA’s associated requirements for a testing facility
- Experience with coordinating and performing quality assurance, governance, auditing, and corporate reporting activities
- Prior involvement in the development, implementation, and review of quality assurance and governance procedures, practices, and frameworks
- Ability to provide guidance on quality assurance processes and planning, including the review and improvement of laboratory-based activities
- Familiarity with overseeing the ongoing suitability of an inventory of specialised scientific equipment
- Developed interpersonal skills to facilitate formal meetings that involve an array of stakeholders
