The opportunity

  • Great role to apply your modelling and programming skills into diverse projects
  • Exciting ongoing opportunity to build your career in fisheries research
  • Join CSIRO – Australia’s National Science Agency – and create real scientific impact!

Are you a motivated marine/Fisheries Scientist with a background and experience in applied modelling? We are currently seeking a skilled Quantitative Fisheries Scientist to join our talented multidisciplinary team in an exciting ongoing role, and it could be the next career step you are looking for!

Australian fisheries are among the best managed in the world, and CSIRO’s research has provided the backbone for the transformation of Australian fisheries, from understanding fish biology, movements and ecosystems, to developing standard approaches for fisheries assessment and ecosystem-based management.

As a Quantitative Fisheries Scientist, you will join our diverse ‘Temperate Population Dynamics and MSE’ team that conducts marine resource research and oversees the assessment of fish stocks in Australia's southern fisheries. You will bring your well-developed analytical skills and modelling expertise to contribute to a range of externally-funded research projects that involves stock status estimation, management strategy evaluation (MSE), and the evaluation of broader marine ecosystem impacts in Australian and international fisheries. While the initial focus of your role will be to use your experience in quantitative and qualitative modelling to assist with key marine resource management decisions, it is also expected to play a vital role in building & strengthening CSIRO’s innovative marine research capabilities in the long-term, such as machine learning applications and close-kin mark-recapture modelling. Therefore, this role presents you with an opportunity to hone your knowledge and skills, while building on your background and career in fisheries research.

If you’re interested in being part of multifaceted projects, growing your domain knowledge and experience in fisheries research, and collaborating with a range of leading individuals & organisations to create real impact, this would be a great opportunity for you! CSIRO offers you excellent professional development and we are strongly committed to supporting the growth of your skills & career.

Your duties will include:

  • Undertaking research and analysis relevant to the management of Australian living marine resources.
  • Drawing on professional expertise, knowledge of other disciplines and research experience to recognise opportunities for innovation and generate new theoretical perspectives by pursuing new ideas/approaches and networking with scientific colleagues across a range of disciplines.
  • Participating in identification of further opportunities which arise from research and initiating new lines of research.
  • Liaising with clients to determine their needs and taking personal responsibility for client satisfaction.
  • Interacting with other CSIRO researchers in identifying research priorities and developing new project proposals.
  • Presenting results in a meaningful format, preparing reports for clients and/or writing scientific papers for publication.

Location: Hobart, TAS

Salary: AU$110K – AU$119K pa + up to 15.4% superannuation

Tenure: Indefinite

Reference: 97071

To be considered you will need:

  • A PhD, or equivalent combination of qualifications and research experience, in mathematics, statistics, environmental science or natural resource management, including formulating, implementing and applying quantitative natural resource models in an environmental or natural resource management context.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake original, creative and innovative research by generating and pursuing novel ideas and solutions to scientific research problems.
  • A demonstrated publication history of authorship on scientific papers in peer reviewed journals and/or reports, grant applications or inventorship on patent applications.
  • Demonstrated computer programming ability in R, C++, Python, or similar language.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team.
