About us
As a department our purpose is to help the community to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from the impact of fire and emergency events.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) is the primary provider of fire, rescue and emergency management programs and services throughout Queensland. The department encompasses the Fire and Rescue Service, disaster management services, the Rural Fire Service and the State Emergency Service (SES), and also supports other volunteer groups providing emergency response to Queenslanders.
QFES is one department with many services, many capabilities and many partners.
Purpose of the role
SES is the primary responder for storm and flood events and provide support to other agencies such as Queensland Police Service through performing additional functions including search and rescue, emergency traffic management, and road crash rescue. The SES becomes involved in preparing for, and responding to, many different types of disasters and emergencies.
As Regional Director, you will be responsible for providing management and strategic direction to SES programs, including stakeholder management for the region. You will be required to lead regional SES staff and volunteers in support of the QFES objectives.

Key requirements
Mandatory requirements
* Eligible to apply for, or hold a current valid Blue Card (from Blue Card Services).
* Travel will be a considerable requirement of this role, which may include travel to rural and remote communities.
Highly desirable requirements
* Knowledge and/or experience or qualifications in disaster management.
* Demonstrated ability to provide operational leadership and management of large-scale incidents using the Australian Inter-service Incident Management System/ Integrated Management System methodology.
Special requirements
* This role is also a designated SES uniformed position; therefore, it is expected the incumbent may possess and/or maintain the necessary skills/expertise or experience to be appointed as an Authorised Rescue Officer in accordance with section 148(2) of the Fire and Emergency Services Act 1990.
* Functions associated with this position require the appointee to participate in an out of hours on-call roster. This may require work outside of normal hours (e.g. night shift), including weekends.
* Capacity to travel in support of operational requirements. This may require deployment to other parts of the state for an indeterminate period as necessary.
* Capacity to work extended hours during disaster operations
Your key accountabilities
Your part in the ongoing success of our department, in supporting key frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work, including, but not limited to:
* Provide strategic guidance and direction to enhance the planning, implementation, management, and evaluation of QFES disaster management and SES support programs within the region.
* Oversee and coordinate strategic staffing issues within the region to assist with the continuity of QFES service delivery.
* Contribute to the planning, implementation, management and evaluation of whole-of-government and whole-of-department programs and corporate initiatives.
* Develop, monitor, and evaluate SES management programs and provide regular reports on the achievement of QFES strategic program objectives within the region.
* Coordinate QFES representation at key forums, committees, conferences, and other events to enhance stakeholder and client understanding, and commitment to disaster management and mitigation programs and objectives.
* In conjunction with other regional staff, consult and negotiate with peak bodies, other government agencies and non-government agencies to promote disaster management and mitigation best practice.
* Foster teamwork and assist in the ongoing development of staff through performance, planning and review.
* Undertake operational duties during emergencies and disasters which may involve intra and interstate deployments at short notice and out of business hours.
