The Detmold Group is a privately owned global leader in the manufacturing and sale of specialised paper and board packaging products. This team is the centre for research and development, concept creation, rapid prototyping and works with our customers to provide fast, integrated product development services.
We are currently seeking a Materials Technologist to join our dynamic Research and Development team. This is a multifaceted role with responsibilities including engaging with suppliers to identify and understand new technologies, capabilities and unlock opportunities for collaboration with Universities and Industry to support our product innovation goals.

More specifically, you will:
- Act as a subject matter expert on fibre and coating technologies
- Work with existing and new suppliers to understand new material technologies (specifically inks, barrier coatings, varnishes) and functional capabilities for application to the business
- Investigate relevant standards for legislative and customer requirements
- Work with Laboratory Technicians and R&D Manager to conduct testing and produce reports for functional performance and food safety claims
- Develop new testing methods, where international standard methods do not exist, particularly in line with changing sustainability requirements
- Support external testing, validation and certification of sustainability and legislative claims
- Investigate opportunities to collaborate with universities and industry to enable partnership development to facilitate innovation, ideation, research and funding
- Support the NPD and Design teams to execute key projects from ideation to market
- Support Group Quality in investigations of complex product performance or compliance issues
- Collaborate with Group functions and stakeholders to identify, prioritise and ensure accountability for key deliverables
- Be curious and explore new technologies, materials, suppliers, and ideas and bring awareness to the team
About You
As the successful candidate, you will have:
- Tertiary study in Chemical Engineering, Material Engineering, Material Science, or similar discipline
- Relevant experience in research and development and/or packaging industry (favourable)
- Curiosity to seek to learn about new technologies and explore new ideas to provide innovation
- Analytical mindset to examine results thoroughly to enable a strong understanding to provide solutions
- Exceptional driveto maintain outcomes that deliver benefits for us and our customers
- Ability to collaborate and work in a high functioning team who drive change for the better
- An aptitude for technical and commercial decision making
- Practical hands-on approach with a ‘can do’ attitude
