About UQ

As part of the UQ community, you’ll have the opportunity to work alongside the brightest minds, who have joined us from all over the world, and within an environment where interdisciplinary collaborations are encouraged.

UQ has made a commitment to making education opportunities available for all Queenslanders, regardless of personal, financial, or geographical barriers.

As part of our commitment to excellence in research and professional practice in academic contexts, we are proud to provide our staff with access to world-class facilities and equipment, grant writing support, greater research funding opportunities, and other forms of staff support and development.

About Us and This Opportunity

We are a team of passionate researchers and research support staff who make up the First Nations Cancer and Wellbeing Research (FNCWR) team. We work collaboratively with communities and the community-controlled health sector to deliver equitable health and wellbeing for First Nations peoples.

Our team leads diverse, innovative research projects under the FNCWR Program, addressing a range of health challenges related to cancer and wellbeing. The FNCWR Program is supported through major competitive funding including NHMRC, MRFF and ARC grants. We are committed to privileging First Nations experiences and perspectives in our research, and to implementing research methods to ensure cultural-appropriateness and responsiveness.

We are looking for a highly motivated early-mid career academic to join our Cancer Research team. This role has been established to support two NHMRC funded projects led by Professor Gail Garvey:

  • The Synergy Grant (#2027475) aims to achieve equity in cancer screening for First Nations peoples through co-designing and implementing equitable, sustainable, and scalable cancer screening programs and initiatives that are developed by and driven in partnership with First Nations people and communities.

  • The First Nations Cancer Cohort Study (CanCo) (#2024234) will establish a prospective population-based cohort of First Nations peoples diagnosed with cancer and their caregivers.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Develop an independent and/or team research program to achieve national recognition and impact in the research area.

  • Actively maintain collaborative relationships with the investigator and research team.

  • Produce quality research outputs consistent with discipline norms by publishing or exhibiting in high quality outlets.

  • Participate in or contribute to applications for competitive research funding to support projects and activities, which includes actively seeking, obtaining and managing research funding.

  • Demonstrate personal effectiveness in supervision and management and development of researcher capability and skill.

  • Effectively and efficiently manage internal service roles and administrative processes as required, including participation in decision-making and service on relevant committees.

  • Demonstrate citizenship behaviours that align to the UQ values.

This is a research focused position. Further information can be found by viewing UQ’s Criteria for Academic Performance.

This is a full-time (100%), fixed-term position through until March 2027. At Academic level B, the full-time equivalent (FTE) base salary will be in the range $108,201.26 - $128,201.75, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $126,595.47 - $149,996.05 annually. As this role is covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases – at least once a year.

The greater benefits of joining the UQ community are broad: from being part of a Group of Eight university, to recognition of prior service with other Australian universities, up to 26 weeks of paid parental leave, 17.5% annual leave loading, flexible working arrangements including hybrid on site/WFH options and flexible start/finish times, and genuine career progression opportunities via the academic promotions process.

About You

  • A growing profile in research in the discipline area.

  • A developing reputation and track record of publications in reputed refereed journals and presenting at conferences.
