About the Lab
The lab is led by Tim Miller, Professor of Artificial Intelligence at The University of Queensland. The mission of the lab is to amplify the capabilities of people using artificial intelligence. About This Opportunity
We are seeking two Postdoctoral Research Fellow’s to join Professor Tim Miller and his team focussing on human-centered Decision Support using artificial intelligence (AI).
The first position is for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with experience in human factors, HCI, psychology, or related area and the second is focused on candidates with experience in human-centred machine learning. Both positions will work with Tim and his team on human-centered Decision Support using artificial intelligence (AI).
The successful candidate’s will apply their expertise in machine learning and/or human factors/HCI/psychology on a range of projects that aim to enhance performance of expert decisions makers. The successful candidates will work with the lab team and external experts to design, develop, and evaluate Decision Support tools for high-stakes decision making, such as medical diagnosis and treatment. It is expected that the successful candidate will each contribute to research, some engagement, and to teaching part of one course per year or supervise thesis students. This is a valuable opportunity to develop a teaching portfolio and an emerging research portfolio when applying for academic and other research positions in the future.
Key responsibilities will include:
• Produce quality and impactful research in the area of human-centered AI.
• Publish outputs in high quality outlets, such as CHI, CSCW, FAccT, AAAI, IJCAI, NeurIPs, CVPR, EMNLP or similar (including journals).
• Work with the team and external domain experts in joint research projects and applications for competitive research funding support.
• Develop a coherent research program and an emerging research profile in the area of human-centered artificial intelligence.
• Teach part of one course per year within the School of EECS.
• Contribute to the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students (as appropriate).
• Work to promptly resolve conflict and grievances when they arise in accordance with University policy and procedures.
• Demonstrate citizenship behaviours that align to the UQ values and with the missions and values of the lab.
• Show emerging or developed leadership and self-management through collaboration and active participation in priority activities.
• Contribute to internal service roles and administrative processes as required, including participation in decision-making and service on relevant committees.
• Begin to develop external links and partnerships by cultivating relationships with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community.

These are full time fixed-term positions for up to 2 years. At Academic level A. The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $92,938.86 - $102,945.12, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $108,738.47 - $120,445.79 annually. As this role is covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases – at least once a year.

About You
• Required: Completion or near completion of a PhD in either machine learning or a related area, OR HCI, human factors, psychology applied to AI, or a related area.
• Required: An emerging profile in research in the area of human-centered artificial intelligence.
• Required: Evidence of publications in reputed refereed journals and presenting at conferences such as CHI, CSCW, FAccT, AAAI, IJCAI, NeurIPs, CVPR, EMNLP, or similar.
• Required: Demonstrated experience in machine learning, such as deep learning for image processes, deep learning for natural language processing, or interpretable machine learning (for machine learning role); OR demonstrated experience in human-centred methods, such co-design, participatory design, conducting human behavioural experiments, and conducting field studies (for HCI/human factors/psychology role).
• Required: Experience in conducting human behavioural experiments.
• Desirable: Evidence of contributions towards successfully obtaining external research funding.
• Desirable: Demonstrated experience in the area of trust, reliance, explainability/interpretability, Decision Support, or cognitive/social psychology; as applied to artificial intelligence.
