About the Role
The Sydney Brain Bank at NeuRA is a facility that collects, characterises and stores human brain tissue for use in neuroscience research in Australia and overseas.
We seek a highly motivated individual to undertake a varied role including managing the brain donor program that is associated with the Sydney Brain Bank with the primary aim of collecting longitudinal clinical information during life, coordinating and retrieving brain and spinal cord tissue after death for the purposes of research and conducting research on this resource. This position will also be responsible for tissue dissection, processing and analysis.

The successful applicant will:
- Liaise with relevant health practitioners/NSW Health staff to collect paperwork necessary for brain and spinal cord removal at mortuary facility.
- Perform brain and spinal cord autopsies
- Manage adequate and ethical collection and databasing of all information
- Manage the associated brain donor program, liaising with brain donors and their families as back-up to the Liaison Officer
- Maintain an on-call presence (pager roster up to 15 days a month) for out-of-hours brain collection and fresh dissection (performed Mon- Fri 9am-5pm and two-in-four Saturdays between 9am-5pm)
- Assist with the neuropathological analysis of brain and spinal cord tissue
- Prepare and write reports on neuropathological findings
- Carry out research on the tissue resource
- Contribute to grant writing, manuscript preparation and report writing.
- Supervise students utilising the SBB resource, as required
- Assist the Sydney Brain Bank Director and Manager, as required.
Selection Criteria:
Essential criteria
- Degree in neuroscience or relevant field
- Experience with tissue handling
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent organisational and time management skills with attention to detail
- Proven ability to work as part of a team and independently
- Ability to work to deadlines with a flexible attitude toward work
- Valid driver’s licence
- Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training
- Knowledge of WHS responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant WHS training and knowledge of equal opportunity principles
Desirable criteria
- Post-graduate qualification in neuroscience or relevant field
- Knowledge of neuroanatomy, neuropathology and neurodegenerative disorders
- Knowledge of brain banking
- Experience with File maker database systems
- Knowledge of autopsy procedure.
