The School of Psychology at UNSW is the leading Psychology school in Australia. It is located in the Faculty of Science and is recognised nationally and internationally for its excellence in research and teaching.  It offers world class undergraduate psychology degrees, as well as postgraduate professional Masters training in Clinical and Forensic Psychology, an online Graduate Diploma program, and a PhD research program with over 120 students. 40 academic staff conduct experimental research in many areas of Psychology, including behavioural and cognitive neuroscience, perception, learning, memory and cognition, as well as health, social, developmental, clinical and forensic psychology. The Research Officer (Driving Project Coordinator) will support a range of projects on older driver safety, including the Evaluation and Implementation of Evidence Based Resources for Ageing and Driving Safety project, funded by the National Road Safety Action Grant. Led by Professor Kaarin Anstey, this project will work with key stakeholders within a well-established knowledge translation framework ensuring evidence-based resources meet the needs of older road users and clinicians involved in Fitness to Drive evaluations.

About the role

  • LEVEL 6 ($96k – $103k) plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term – 20 months
  • Full time (35 hours)

The role reports to Professor Kaarin Anstey, supporting the Faculty of Science and the School of Psychology, and has no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include: 

  • Provision of practical and efficient research support to stakeholders, assisting in the conduct of research that contributes to a better understanding of older driver safety, and the resource needs of older drivers and clinicians.
  • Support in the conceptualisation, design, and successful conduct of projects with older drivers.
  • Prepare and contribute to the production of online stakeholder resources on driver safety, technical reports, and manuscripts for publication.
  • Conduct participant recruitment for and data collection using focus groups, interviews and surveys with older drivers and clinicians.
  • Manage the technical aspects of databases, including coordinating and executing data cleaning, data management processes and ensuring research integrity in research databases.
  • Perform quantitative/qualitative data analyses as required by the research project.
  • Proactively assist with research reports, peer-reviewed publications, presentations, ethics applications and progress reports.
  • Monitor research protocols, provide problem solving and resolution to any evolving problems related to design, implementation and analysis.
  • Liaise with organisations, data custodians, stakeholders and collaborators and actively participate in meetings and discussions as required.
  • Coordinate, plan and complete day-to-day research activities within the framework of agreed project timelines and responsibilities.

About the successful applicant
(Selection Criteria)

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A university degree in Occupational Therapy (desirable) or Psychology or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through a combination of education, training or experience.
  • Experience as a clinician or working in clinical settings (desirable).
  • Knowledge of research protocols, experimental design and planning as involved in developing research projects and reporting against milestones.
  • Experience working with a range of computer systems and applications, including online survey tools such as Qualtrics or REDCap, or the capacity to learn how to use these.
  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal communication skills to initiate and maintain effective stakeholder relationships whilst exercising discretion and confidentiality.
  • Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail and the ability to liaise effectively with a range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
