Would you like the opportunity to work in , exploring the region's natural beauty, warm hospitality, and superb tourism experiences?
Interested in an exceptional and rewarding medical opportunity starting mid 2024?
About us:
Peel Health Campus (PHC) is a general hospital located in the City of Mandurah, 75 km south of Perth on the doorstep of the south-west, known for its stunning beaches, internationally significant wetlands, and some of Australia’s most spectacular waterways for boating, fishing and wildlife. It originally opened in 1988 as the 32-bed Mandurah District Hospital, and now operates with 206 licenced beds, bays and treatment areas.
In late 2020 the WA Government announced that full operation of the Peel Health Campus (PHC) would transfer to South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS) on the completion of the current contract with existing private operator Ramsay Health Care (RHC).
Transitioning the hospital to public hands paves the way for the hospital’s redevelopment and service transformation to meet the needs of the Peel-Murray region.
About the role:
RMO roles at PHC offer varied, challenging and rewarding clinical opportunities. There are extensive opportunities to be involved in critical care cases, inter-hospital transfers of critically unwell patients, toxicology cases, procedural sedation, and airway management. PHC has established an excellent reputation in the community for its high commitment to customer service, staff satisfaction and quality improvement. Make the most of your role at PHC and explore the region's natural beauty, warm hospitality, and superb tourism experiences.
Paediatrics
Here, you will look after a 12-bed paediatric ward responsible for acute admissions. There is a wide range of paediatric conditions treated with many seasonal variances. Primarily, there will be acute admissions from ED, which are suitable for management in Peel whilst also accommodating step-downs from Perth Children's Hospital. You will also cover the maternity ward for newborn baby checks. There is a huge opportunity for bedside teaching from a supportive group of paediatric consultants who provide 24-hour on-call services. There is also a small follow-up clinic service where the consultant will review patients following.
General Medicine
General medicine covers acute admissions mainly from Peel Health Campus ED, which are suitable for treatment in Peel. They cover a broad range of conditions from acute to chronic, with onsite input from respiratory, infectious diseases, psychiatry, and cardiology. The Mandurah catchment is large and diverse, so you can expect to manage a wide variety of interesting, complex chronic conditions alongside the acute presentations. We also have an amazing allied health team who work alongside us to aid in discharges and social issues.
Emergency Medicine
Comprising 20% paediatrics, working within the emergency department at PHC, you'll be rostered to a mix of main floor, fast-track, and observation ward medicine, with good exposure to resuscitation cases. Our ED consultant group is renowned for its teaching and support of junior doctors, inspiring many to forge a career in emergency medicine. We offer ACEM training in emergency medicine (accredited for 24 months, including the Paediatric Logbook) and the Emergency Medicine Certificate and Diploma programs. Formal teaching includes two hours per week of rostered teaching, regular weekly simulation teaching, and fortnightly radiology teaching. Flexible rostering accommodates tertiary hospital specialty teaching sessions as part of a post-graduate training program.
Geriatric / Rehabilitation Medicine
The rehab unit at PHC is responsible for sub-acute patients requiring additional allied health input before discharge. It caters for both inpatient referrals and external transfers for patients treated in other hospitals but who reside in our catchment area.
The unit caters for sub-acute patients split into two categories – Rehab and Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM);

  • Rehab is for patients requiring at least a week of additional physiotherapy / occupational therapy input. They should be mostly well with a medical plan in place and cannot be for nursing home placement – for inpatient and externals.
  • GEM is for patients who are nearing discharge but require a few days of additional therapy before discharge, should they become acutely unwell or require a nursing home, they can be referred back to their inpatient team with no external transfers.
General Surgery
The general surgery unit is responsible for acute and elective admissions. There is a broad case mix of elective and emergency surgical cases with an excellent opportunity to assist in theatre. The variety of surgical presentations to the emergency department that require initial review by the surgical JMO team will fast-track and develop your surgical assessment skills. You will have the opportunity to perform a range of common surgical procedures under supervision.
By the end of this term, you will achieve satisfactory performance in all nine competencies of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons i.e., collaboration, communication, health advocacy, judgement – clinical decision making, medical expertise, professionalism, scholar and teach, technical expertise, management, and leadership.
