About the business
Macquarie Respiratory and Sleep is a group of expert consulting specialists and Respiratory Scientists operating out of Macquarie University Hospital. Our respiratory physicians and laboratory staff provide expertise covering a wide range of pulmonary pathologies including asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, lung cancer, interstitial and environmental lung diseases, respiratory failure and sleep disorders.
We provide services for both inpatients and outpatients including modern lung function laboratories and an overnight diagnostic sleep unit. We are also a centre of excellence for advanced interventional bronchoscopic procedures in NSW offering our patients access to the latest advances in this field.
An opportunity has arisen for an experienced, enthusiastic and well-organised Respiratory Scientist to join our team.
Position Description
The primary responsibilities of this position are:
1. Perform routine tests of lung function on patients attending the clinic
2. Apply your scientific skills to ensure that measurement accuracy is consistently achieved
3. Demonstrate a high level of patient care
4. Participate in the lab quality assurance program
5. Work independently and within a team to tight timeframes
Detailed Summary of Duties
- Calibration and preparation of equipment used in respiratory function testing
- Work in accordance with the laboratory procedures manual and international guidelines
- Perform respiratory function tests (spirometry, DLCO, lung volumes, MIPs/MEPs, FOT, Mannitol challenge, 6MWT, CPET) according to international standards
- Achieve accurate, reliable and repeatable measurements of a patient's respiratory function
- Analyse, calculate and present the results for reporting
- Observe cleaning and infection control procedures within the lab
- General administration duties involved with the operation of the lab
- Maintaining stocks of consumable items
- Education of medical students in lung function testing
- Set up home sleep studies and download data for reporting
Essential Criteria
1. Tertiary qualifications (B Science, B App Science or equivalent)
2. Experience in respiratory function measurements
3. Effective written and interpersonal communication skills
4. Commitment to work effectively within a team environment
5. Attention to detail
