Job description

Cross River Rail Delivery Authority (CRRDA)…Your chance to work with the best!

Cross River Rail will transform the way we travel to, from and through Brisbane in the future. It will be a catalyst for 10 years of wider rail transformation across the whole of South East Queensland and it is already playing a key role in how we prepare for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Cross River Rail is a new 10.2km rail line including 5.9km of twin tunnels running under the Brisbane River and CBD. It includes the delivery of four new underground stations, two new above-ground stations, accessibility rebuilds for six stations, the construction of three new stations on the Gold Coast, and the introduction of a new world-class ‘ETCS' signalling system.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to work on one of Australia's largest infrastructure projects and to be a part of something that will leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.

About the Role

The Safety Manager provides leadership, support and guidance on safety matters for the CRRDA. We have two positions currently available; one supporting our program of surface station rebuilds and the other with oversight of our Brownfield Rail and European Train Control System (ETCS) programs of work. The role will be responsible for leading the implementation and maintenance of our safety systems and initiatives across the project while supporting and coaching senior management on contemporary safety practices. The position also entails stakeholder liaison with our key contracting partners regarding coordination of safety assurance activities.

The role reports directly to the Director, Safety and is based at our corporate office conveniently located in Brisbane’s CBD. This opportunity is offered as a fixed term contract until December 2025 with possible extension and represents a fantastic opportunity for a health and safety management professional to gain exceptional career growth opportunities working on a historic Queensland infrastructure project.

Key responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with program managers to establish a safety-focused culture and set clear safety performance expectations and standards across the project.
  • Develop safety processes and initiatives that encourage safety ownership by line managers.
  • Provide technical safety advice and support in the areas of critical risk management, incident investigation reviews and safety process implementation.
  • Coordinate safety compliance and assurance activities, providing analysis and reporting on outcomes.
  • Contribute to the development of CRRDA’s H&S management system and implement accordingly through all project phases.
  • Oversee and review the process and outcomes of safety incident investigations sharing best practices across the project.
  • Prepare high level correspondence include briefing notes and reports with both a strategic and operational safety focus.
  • Establish safety forums and liaise with internal and external stakeholders, including contractors to deliver services aligned with CRRDA needs and priorities.
  • Review safety systems and identify business improvement activities, risk mitigation strategies and supporting treatment plans.

About You

As our successful candidate you will hold most of the following competencies:

  • Tertiary qualification in a safety related discipline.
  • Experience leading contractor safety management within the construction or mining industry.
  • Experience and qualifications in a live rail operational environment will be highly regarded.
  • Ability to analyse data, articulate complex concepts and translate safety information accordingly into briefings, reports and presentations.
  • Strong understanding of critical risks and the application of verification processes in a dynamic and evolving engineering and construction environment.
  • Proven ability to build relationships with and effectively influence and coordinate stakeholders with potentially contrasting objectives.
  • Demonstrated experience leading safety from a client or tier one perspective, with ability to manage complex workplace relationships, specifically in relation to managing safety through a third party.

Why work with CRRDA?

On Cross River Rail you will not only work with the best but become your best. And as we enter a new phase of delivery, our project offers a rare career opportunity for top tier professionals to have played their part on something that is genuinely city shaping and transformative.

Our people are supported with flexible work options, career development through the Australian Institute of Management, salary packaging and access to world class employee assistance provider Benestar.

At Cross River Rail we are an equal opportunity employer and strive to build balanced teams from all walks of life.
