The Senior Manager - Safety will support the EGM Mining & Technical Services, the site General Managers and leadership teams to ensure Harmony achieves and maintains a benchmarked world class safety performance; improving operational safety awareness and culture to a level where proactive behavioural participation occurs across all levels of the business.
This dynamic role involves a combination of Brisbane-based work with flexible practices and on-site presence at Hidden Valley Mine in PNG, operating on the following roster; 9 days in PNG (Mine Site) 5 days off, followed by a 5/2 Mon-Fri, 5/2 Mon-Fri rotation in Brisbane.
Reporting to the Executive General Manager – Mining & Technical Services, the key responsibilities of this role include:
- Ensuring the right systems and tools are in place to enable risk-based decision making and to build a proactive behavioural based safety culture where staff are empowered to stop the job if it is not safe.
- Development of the site safety managers and direct reports.
- Ensuring the business has a safety system that is robust and meets the needs of the expanding operations.
- Participate as a key member of the regional senior management team to develop strategies, management plans, standards, guidelines and procedures to ensure implementation of the approved plans in accordance with the strategic business plan.
- Ensuring safety standards and statutory requirements are achieved or exceeded and that all work is executed within the framework set by the safety management plan.
- Contribute to the development of strategic and annual plans.
- Oversee the implementation of management initiatives and ensure appropriate alignment with strategy and the requirements of other disciplines.
- Implement and review systems and processes to ensure that operating disciplines are maintained at all times.
- Collaborate with the onsite teams to assist in the timely and effective execution of safety plans and schedules.
- In collaboration with the site General Manager, manage the performance and development of the broader safety team, assisting with recruitment decisions, applying performance management practices, and implementing training and coaching programs. Ensuring targets for progressive nationalisation of the workforce in accordance with the business plan.
- Provide all necessary internal and external reports on safety and operational performance, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Responsible for ensuring strict compliance and the highest level of safety and risk management associated with aviation activities for Harmony operations.
To succeed in this role, you should be a highly experienced professional, self-motivated, and able to work efficiently and collaboratively holding the following qualifications and experience:
- Relevant tertiary qualification.
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in large scale open pit mining including leadership and management roles.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire teams.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively communicate with stakeholders at all levels.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
