This is a newly funded position from the Ministry of Health to support the newly created Child and Adolescent Safety Paediatrician (CASP) rurally and regionally in the Southern region of NSW.What you'll be doingSydney Children’s Hospital Randwick (SCHR) is part of the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network, a state wide tertiary clinical, educational and research facility dedicated to excellence in the provision of children’s health care.The position of Staff Specialist in the Child Protection Unit (CPU) is part of a multidisciplinary Child Protection team. The role of this position is to ensure the delivery of high quality Child Protection forensic medical services to children when there are concerns that a child may have been abused or neglected. The CPU Staff Specialist will provide forensic medical assessments for child sexual assault, physical abuse and neglect as well as complex cases, including fabricated or induced illness (FII).The clinical service includes a consultation service to other clinicians in the hospital to assist in the assessment and treatment of children at risk of harm and giving advice via CASACAL (Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Clinical Advice Line) for Southern NSW. As well as the acute medical response, the Staff Specialist will be expected to run the wellbeing clinic (for children who have experienced historical sexual assault) and/or the OOHC (out of home care clinic).This position will have responsibilities in other domains such as supervision of junior medical staff in CPU, teaching and training (including the annual forensic course and biannual CSA simulation course) as well as research and quality activities. Clinical leadership in Child Protection is also expected with participation in regular peer review and interface with state-wide, national and international Child Protection organisations.Provide excellent clinical services to children and their families as part of a multi-disciplinary team.Participate in review and improvement activities, as well as training and education of staff.Abide by the hospital code of conduct and participate in annual performance reviews for clinical services in accordance with the Staff Specialist (State) Award.
- Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist Paediatrician, and/or overseas trained specialist pathways.
- Demonstrated experience in Child Protection work and proven forensic medical skills. A Masters of Forensic Medicine or equivalent qualification is desirable.
- Demonstrated experience and ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team and with other agencies in Child Protection.
- Demonstrated effective clinical communication through the use of information technology and written, verbal and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing education, research and quality improvement.
- Demonstrated record of participation in teaching at the undergraduate and/or post graduate level.
- Availability to participate in an on-call roster and to respond on site within a reasonable time.
