About the Opportunity

Join a team of expert technical staff who manage these instruments and the facilities, as well as analyse samples, develop methods, and provide expert data analysis and interpretation.

The Drug Toxicology Unit (DTU) located at North Ryde provides specialised analytical testing for presence of therapeutic and illicit drugs in urine and oral fluid, servicing the Department of Justice and Health, Opioid Treatment Centres, and various other clinical clients. DTU houses a range of mass spectrometers including Sciex QTrap, QToF and Triple quadrupole 4500 instruments and other specialist instrumentations.

What you'll be doing


To deliver a range of operational and analytical laboratory activities to ensure compliance with operational standards and procedures, quality standards and continual process improvement. The Scientific Officer reports, reviews reports and may be required to give evidence in any court on aspects of work performed.

  1. A Bachelor Degree or higher degree in Science or Applied Science with a major relevant to the Unit, or an equivalent qualification relevant to analytical or forensic science to which the role applies
  2. Demonstrated experience with mass spectrometry instrument platforms and interfaced liquid chromatography equipment, particularly LC-MS/MS. Knowledge of instrumentation like Sciex Mass Spectrometry and Tecan robotics or similar.
  3. Experience in sample preparation techniques and advanced knowledge in method development and validation in an accredited laboratory or relevant environment.
  4. Ability to troubleshoot instruments and maintain laboratory equipment, including adherence to maintenance schedules.
  5. Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to educate internal and external stakeholders, report writing skills and willingness to provide expert evidence in courts
  6. Display initiative, problem solving and analytical skills including an ability to apply established principles and investigate and resolve general and complex issues within the laboratory environment
  7. Sound understanding of legislation, policies and requirements that impact the laboratory environment including work health and safety, privacy and quality improvement requirements
  8. Demonstrated capacity to adopt and model the NSWHP RITES values of Respect, Integrity, Teamwork and Excellence

Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases

This is a Category A position. All Category A applicants must read and understand NSW Health Policy Directive PD2023_022 Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases. All recruits must agree to comply with the requirements outlined in this policy. All recruits must provide evidence against specified diseases and comply with the requirements of this policy at their own cost prior to appointment.

All NSW Health workers are required to have two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, as defined by NSW Health. Employees working in a clinical area or are required to attend clinical areas are considered category A. Category A positions are required to provide evidence of having received three doses of COVID-19 vaccine in accordance with the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (TGA) and meet the requirements of the Occupational Assessment Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy Directive. You will be required to provide a record of your COVID-19 vaccination status if successful.

Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations.
