About the Role:

Join The Diagnostic Genomics Department at Canberra Health Services (ACT Pathology) with this rare opportunity! We are a multi-disciplinary team, utilising conventional and molecular techniques for genomic investigations of both somatic and constitutional investigations. As we begin to develop an NGS service, and expand our microarray services, this is both an exciting and busy time for the team. We are looking for someone with enthusiasm, exceptional communication skills, high attention to detail, and a positive team-focused emotional culture. Whether you are experienced in genomics, or striving to develop experience in this fascinating field, this may be the opportunity you have been looking for. We are seeking applicants for a part-time (2 days per week) 2-year contract. ACT Pathology is a division of the Canberra Health Services with laboratories located at both the Canberra Hospital and Calvary Public Hospital operating 24 hours, seven days a week all year round. Pathology provides diagnostic and consultative services to medical specialists and general practitioners and their patients in hospital and in the community.

The Diagnostic Genomics Department is a multidisciplinary laboratory performing conventional cytogenetics, microarray techniques, Fluorescence In Situ Hybridisation (FISH) and molecular genetic techniques for the investigation of constitutional and somatic (oncological) abnormality.  Our laboratory services Canberra and the surrounding region.  The team is led by the Supervising Scientist (HP4 and comprised of 2 Health Professionals Level 3 (HP3), 4 Health ProfessionalsLevel 2 (HP2) and 1 Technical Officer (TO1).

This position offers an exciting opportunity, under the direction of the Supervising Scientist and Senior Scientists of Diagnostic Genomics, to be part of a dynamic team that provides an expanding and comprehensive Diagnostic Genomics service.

A temporary part-time position (0.4FTE, 2 full days per week) has become available, for a 2-year period, with the possibility of additional hours where available by the discretion of the supervising scientist (dependant on operational requirements). This position will be job-sharing with another part-time position. This position offers an excellent opportunity for an individual seeking a part-time working arrangement. The successful candidate will develop or utilise their experience in the exciting and expanding field of human genomics, contributing to excellent patient care.

Canberra Hospital Expansion Project – CHS is constructing a new critical services building called ‘Building 5’ which is a 44,000sqm nine storey building specifically designed to deliver state-of-the-art acute clinical services at the Canberra Hospital. Building 5 is the largest healthcare infrastructure project undertaken in the Territory’s history and it represents the largest clinical and operational change program to ever be implemented by Canberra Health Services. Building 5 integrates with a number of existing buildings at the Campus including Building 1 and Building 2, to facilitate a seamless public thoroughfare, patient transportation and back-of-house logistics distribution.

North Canberra Hospital - As of 3 July 2023 Calvary Public Hospital Bruce transitioned to CHS and became North Canberra Hospital. The transition will deliver a health system networked under one provider and will provide increased workforce opportunities for staff at both CHS sites. The ACT Government will be building a new northside hospital on the existing hospital campus in Bruce to meet the growing health care needs of our community, with construction to commence mid-decade providing more beds, increased services, and increased career opportunities.
