Scientist Molecular Haematology

The Senior Scientist will apply high level scientific knowledge, skills, experience and scientific leadership requiring independent decision making and judgement in Molecular Haematology leading to the provision of pathology results and high-level advice to client groups.This role is primarily required to develop and validate molecular assays for diagnostic haematology testing using a variety of molecular methods and in accordance with regulatory standards and guidelines for pathology laboratories

Exercise independent scientific judgement in providing high level advice regarding the requirements for and interpretation of Molecular Haematology testing to both scientists and medical staff on a state-wide basis in accordance with prescribed professional and ethical standards.

Key competencies (role specific criteria)

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:

• Demonstrated knowledge, expertise and skill in the delivery of scientific judgement within a molecular biology laboratory, particularly in the field of diagnostic haematology.
• Demonstrated ability to provide scientific services of a complex nature to ensure the maintenance of professional clinical standards and established principles / procedures.
• Demonstrated ability and skills to develop and validate molecular assays for mutation screening and minimal residual disease monitoring using a variety of platforms including quantitative real time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), digital PCR and Next-generation sequencing (NGS).
• Demonstrated ability to actively participate in a team environment and to communicate effectively with clients, clinical staff, and colleagues.
• Demonstrated ability to provide advice to laboratory and medical staff on the suitability of testing and interpretation of results pertaining to Molecular
• Demonstrated ability (or ability to rapidly acquire the skill) to identify, develop and implement quality and service improvement activities in accordance with NATA/ISO accreditation/certification.

Qualifications, registrations and other requirements

• The successful applicant must hold at least a relevant tertiary degree (or equivalent) qualification in molecular science.

• It will be a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against one or more of the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment: Hepatitis A & B, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis, Rubella and Varicella.
• Additional vaccinations including Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies may also be required for this position.
