Position Title: Senior Aboriginal Health Worker

Employment Type: Permanent Full Time

Hours per week: 38 per week (after hours and weekend work as required)

Position Grade: Senior Aboriginal Health Worker Year 1/2

Salary: $90,593.00 - $93,972.00 per annum base salary

About the role:

We have an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic team leading our approach to the provision of quality care to clients of the Aboriginal Health Unit.

A vacancy exists in the above unit for a highly motivated Aboriginal Health Worker (AHW) with appropriate knowledge and skills to join our friendly and supportive team. The successful applicant will be expected to be able to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients dealing with health-related issues primarily in the acute and sub-acute settings at St Vincents Hospital, Sydney Ltd (SVHS). The AHW will also assist SVHS staff to provide culturally safe/respectful care to Aboriginal patients and families. The AHW role carries responsibilities for effective liaison and linkage with key community-controlled organisations, particularly Aboriginal community organisation, groups and services.

The position will contribute to the promotion of the Reconciliation Action Plan.

The position will work closely with Allied Health services to patients/clients and their families, liaison with other health care professionals with SVHS and with other external agencies and contribute to the development of policies, procedures and services to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The successful candidate will be required to work weekends and after hours as per the roster.

We are seeking a skilled and energetic Aboriginal Health Worker who possess a passion for person centred care.

Selection Criteria

  • Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the Philosophy, Mission and Values of Mary Aikenhead Ministries and St Vincent's Health Australia.
  • Be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent; identify as an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander; be accepted as an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander in the community in which he/she lives, or has lived. This is a genuine occupational qualification as described under Section 14(d) of the Anti- Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
  • Superior understanding and sensitivity of Aboriginal culture and the issues affecting Aboriginal people including their primary health and welfare needs and experience in providing support and advocacy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as well as qualifications relevant to Aboriginal Health Services in case of Aboriginal Health Education Officer (Graduate)
  • Proven ability and experience in engaging with Aboriginal people and communities in a health care setting, and experience in Homelessness, Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol, Domestic Violence, Child Protection, Trauma, Coronial Process, Sudden Death and/or Chronic Disease management.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills - including advocacy, liaison (internal and external) and negotiation.
  • Effective interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to develop and maintain relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients, families, communities and external stakeholders.
  • High level skills in time management, liaison and negotiation, including the ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team in a high demand environment with competing demands
  • Current NSW Driver's License and willingness to travel as required.
