About the opportunity  

The Senior Adviser is a key member of the Government Affairs team. They are responsible for contributing to proactive and reactive Federal, State & Territory Government engagement in support of Australia Post’s priorities, including a focus on internal and external advisory and advocacy.

The Senior Adviser leads engagement with Parliamentarians and their staff in support of Australia Post’s strategic aims and to maintain crucial relationships with these stakeholders.

The role works with other members of the Government, Industry & Regulatory Affairs team, and other subject matter experts across Australia Post, on stakeholder and industry engagement initiatives, including policy advocacy and advisory functions as required. 

This position requires interstate travel and can be based in either Brisbane or Melbourne.

You’ll be responsible for:

  • Proactively and reactively engage with Federal, State & Territory Government stakeholders in support of Australia Post’s strategic aims. As required, this includes specific policy and strategic issues with government Ministers, Shadow Ministers, Members of Parliament, Senators, and their advisers.
  • Supporting Head of Government Affairs in the development and implementation of strategic Parliamentary engagement plans including programs, briefs and materials for CEO, Executive General Manager/s, and General Manager/s.
  • Assisting Head of Government Affairs in the preparation for appearances before federal and state and territory parliamentary appearances.
  • Providing internal advice and external advice and communication on areas which may include: state and territory government issues, elections and referendums, emergencies and disasters, external territories, product simplification.
  • Monitoring Australia Post issues raised through Question Time in federal, state and territory Parliaments, and respond accordingly.
  • Monitoring Australia Post issues raised in public discourse from Parliamentarians to identify any emerging risks and opportunities, and respond accordingly.
  • Working closely with the constituent correspondence team to monitor MP correspondence on the issues as above and follow up matters as appropriate. 
  • Supporting the development of coherent and persuasive policy submissions and advice to various external forums to help influence parliamentary stakeholders, key industry groups, regulators and public policy forums
  • Supporting the provision of high-level internal policy and regulatory advice to support all areas of the business from a Federal, State and Territory Government perspective, and proactively identify opportunities across different industries for Australia Post. 

About you  

You are organised, efficient, adaptable and have a solution-focused attitude. You’re inquisitive, proactive, eager to get stuff done, and enjoy building strong relationships with team members and stakeholders across the business.

What are we looking for:

  • 5+ years in Government Relations / Corporate Affairs / Ministerial adviser / political office / industry association / think tank
  • Demonstrated understanding of and/or interest in political and regulatory environment
  • Demonstrated experience in developing clear communications materials such as briefs, memos, letters, and plans for specific audiences
  • Ability to communicate complex information simply to a wide range of audiences
  • An ability to juggle competing demands and priorities; and balance strategic and tactical priorities to deliver outcomes
  • Proven ability to mediate across multi-functional or multi-discipline teams in order to achieve agreed objectives
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, particularly the ability to gain the cooperation and trust of colleagues
