This role can be based in one of our following offices: Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane or Adelaide; subject to the candidate’s preference.
At Hall & Wilcox, our national transport team has expertise in shipping, aviation, road transport and the insurances that underpin the global supply chain. Our team regularly litigates in the State and Federal Courts and handles disputes in Australian and international arbitration. Our Marine Insurance experts work with the Australian Marine Insurance market, international insurers and P&I clubs to resolve coverage issues, claims and successfully pursue recovery actions.
This role sits within our General Insurance section, which has around 200 team members nationally. Our Sydney transport, trade and maritime practice is led by Partner Chris Sacré.
Key responsibilities
The successful candidate will work on a range of contentious and non-contentious matters, including:
- admiralty matters, including ship arrests and judicial sales and providing advice on vessel arrest, maritime liens, and ship registration;
- acting for both claimants and insurers in litigated claims across Australia, including in the QLD, NSW, WA and Federal Court jurisdictions;
- cargo claims, vessel collisions (both pleasurecraft and commercial), professional indemnity claims, work, health and safety investigations, and marine pollution prosecutions; and
- providing advice on commercial marine contracts and cover according to the Marine Insurance Act 1909 and Insurance Contracts Act 1984.
Skills and experience
We would like to hear from you if you have the following skills and experience:
- at least five years of post-admission experience in shipping and transport law;
- ideally you will also have experience in Marine Insurance law;
- interpersonal and client management skills, as well as proven experience in business development;
- a genuine interest in contributing to the continued growth and success of our national transport and trade practice;
