About the role

The role of Senior Commercial Manager is to ensure strong commercial governance across the Transport Major Projects Division. This includes the provision of strong financial oversight to control costs and maximise business margin by managing all head contract, joint venture and sub-contract commercial compliance and financial matters. The Commercial Manager will mentor and guide the Transport Major Projects team in maintaining commercial compliance and adherence to the upstream and downstream obligations for operations.

The Senior Commercial Manager is required to undertake a wide range of activities which may include all or any of the following:

  • Administer the head contracts to ensure activities, responsibilities and obligations of the contracts are met in a timely, accurate, effective and compliant manner;
  • Lead the commercial strategy, delivery and team across the business.
  • Lead all aspects of the Commercial function. This includes the development of, implementation and then delivery of strong Commercial governance and controls;
  • Establishing and maintaining an up-to-date framework of reports for all interested parties on the commercial and financial status of the business;
  • Communicate effectively with a diverse range of external and internal stakeholders for all interested parties on the commercial and financial status of the business, including being a direct interface with the customer at senior levels. Must be able to maintain positive working relationships in a potentially adversarial environment;
  • Lead the commercial and finance function across Transport Major Projects team by ensuring that the leadership teams from the Joint Venture partners are effective in how they maintain the JV and to ensure that the commercial positions of both JV partners are managed effectively;
  • Develop, implement and maintain strong commercial disciplines to ensure that the SMT leads can exercise decisions based on correct commercial and financial information;
  • Set expectations and governance frameworks for downstream contracts and procurement to ensure most cost effective supply chain with inventory control and appropriate payment schedules are implemented to maintain positive cash flow;
  • Provide guidance to overall team on risk management policies and procedures including O&R reporting governance;
  • Identify, negotiate, facilitate, report and close-out contract variations;
  • Assist in the development and preparation of clear, concise performance-based contract administration plans that cost effectively measures the contract performance;
  • Assist in the design, execution and effectiveness of a system of internal control standard reports, templates, and tracking tools which provides reasonable assurance that operations are effective and efficient, assets are safeguarded, warranties are effectively managed, financial information is reliable and compliant with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures;
  • Ensure compliance with all record keeping and reporting requirements;
  • Undertake any adhoc projects, initiatives, tasks as directed by the Managing Director.

About You

  • Tertiary qualification in Accounting, Commerce, Business, Law or a related discipline
  • Exceptional ERP systems and information management skills
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills that demonstrate commitment to customers, advanced writing ability and delivering clear, concise and accurate advice to people at all levels in a professional manner.
  • Drives a culture of integrity, professional accountability and diversity across the business and government through community interactions
  • High level experience in leading, motivating and influencing staff, driving and evaluating work objectives for improved business performance across strategically aligned functions.
  • Minimum of 15 years’ experience in a commercial management related role within an engineering, project management or transport operations environment.
  • Ability to achieve outcomes in an environment of managing complex stakeholder relationships, including key business partners.
  • An advanced knowledge of contracts and legal terminology.
