About the role
This Senior Corporate Accountant role will support the Group Financial Control (GFC) CoEs objectives to ensure Corporate Accounting Policies are complied with by the broader business. The focus of the role also is to ensure proper financial controls exist in the broader business and that they are designed and operating effectively. The outcome of the focus of this role is to gain greater assurance over the financial measures such as P&L and cash flow outcomes and balance sheet positions.
An influential leadership role in an agile structure, the Senior Corporate Accountant sets the vision for the future of our financial assurance processes which need to stay consistent and relevant to the changing and complex environment of the company. This leadership role will exercise influence over other S&F and Business functions to ensure controls are designed and operated effectively. The role will have a reporting mandate to the S&F Leadership team and facilitate leadership decisions and actions to mitigate any deficiencies in the control environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Using understanding of Telstra systems, functional structure and processes you develop a program of work to identify higher risk financial reporting areas
- Developing an understanding of the accounting polcies adopted by Telstra which are in compliance with IFRS.
- Understanding and contributing to the effectiveness of existing bi-annual assurance processes such as Group Management Questionnaires and Balance Sheet Reviews.
- Developing an annual program of work to review the financial controls and assess for design and operating effectiveness. This program includes an engagement model that takes into account the agile ways of working and the matrix organisation that Telstra is
- Engaging with mission teams to understand financial processes associated with large and complex arrangements and review for compliance with IFRS/CAPs.
- Presenting findings on a regular basis to the S&F SLT with the objective of holding lines of business accountable for the controls operated by them and to improve those that are deemed to be less than effective.
- Recruiting and building a small team for this assurance function to support this leadership role in operating at scale
- Training and developing the team to the required competency and be able to operate alongside Statutory, Reporting & Policy and Investment Accounting Group in GFC to be able to assist with the bi annual external reporting process.
- Develop a broad network of cross-functional stakeholders across Telstra and Finance to manage and maintain strong relationships to create seamless experiences for stakeholders and effectively manage the expectations of multiple and challenging stakeholder groups
To be successful in the role you will:
- Hold tertiary qualifications in Accounting
- Hold CA or CPA qualification
- Have demonstrated experience in a similar role in a corporate organisation
- Have strong Technical Accounting knowledge (including business combinations, impairment, consolidation, revenue recognition, lease accounting)
