Your New Role
Reporting to the Head of Macro Research & Strategy, this Senior Manager role sits within our Asset Allocation team. The Asset Allocation team is responsible for delivering on the fund's investment return objectives. The team conducts macro and investment strategy research, sets the asset allocation and constructs portfolios for the fund's diversified investment options.
This role will lead the Fund's Macro Research coverage of the Australian economy and provide additional coverage on the US and select global economies as part of the broader Asset Allocation Team.
The role focuses on key cyclical macroeconomic indicators including GDP, inflation and the labour market, as well as monetary and fiscal policy trends, that inform the outlook of the economy and asset markets. This research helps to guide the fund's longer-term investment framework.
The appointee will work to integrate key conclusions into Asset Allocation team discussions and decision-making frameworks for portfolio positioning.
Your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Leading and carrying out cyclical economic research covering major global economies of focus to the Fund (with particular focus on Australia and supplementary research on the US and other major economies of significance) to support the fund's tactical positioning.
- Leading and carry out economic research to support the fund's sector and stock selection, particularly in illiquid asset classes such as infrastructure, private equity and property.
- Quantitative economic modelling and analysis for the Asset Allocation team, using a combination of economic, financial and market data.
- Providing economic outlooks to the Asset Allocation Group and the individual asset classes within the Investments Department.
- Contributing to the writing up of regular strategy and investment research papers tabled at the Investment Committee.
- Developing and maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders across the investment department to contribute to our overarching "One Portfolio" ethos.
- Mentoring and day-to-day management of less experienced analysts and positively contribute to team culture to demonstrate ongoing continuous improvement.
What You'll Need
- Extensive experience working as a macroeconomist with an institutional investment manager, investment bank, global consultancy, central bank, government or semi-government agency, or research house.
- Experience in undertaking significant research in, and voicing well-articulated arguments on, cyclical macroeconomic developments and important policy trends in Australia and other key global economies and financial markets.
- Demonstrated macro forecasting skills.
- Experience of both preparing and overseeing the delivery of reports and/or research findings to tight fixed deadlines.
- Experience of presenting coherent and structured economic views, both on paper and verbally, to colleagues and investment committees.
- Advanced MS Office skills, especially Excel, and investment and analysis systems including Macrobond, Bloomberg, EViews, etc.
- Ideally, programming skills in one or more languages (C++, R, Python etc.) and/or experience with econometric / statistical modelling software.
- Must be comfortable dealing with uncertainty and taking a well-considered view relative to consensus.
- Ability to work across the Investment Department and across multiple time zones as part of a virtual research team.
- Line management experience within a research team, including developing analysts into competent economists.
- Superior tertiary qualifications in Economics, Econometrics, Finance or a related field.
- Completed postgraduate studies and/or holds the CFA qualification.
- A strong understanding of investment principles, investment instruments and financial markets.
- A strong eye for detail and focus on accuracy of work.
