Queensland Rail has an exciting decade of growth ahead of it. As part of the ‘rail revolution’ more than $20 billion in new infrastructure and assets will be integrated into the Queensland Rail network so there has never been a more exciting time to join Queensland Rail.

Why These Roles Matter

Your work will directly influence the trajectory of Queensland Rail’s operations and strategies, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to projects that shape the future of Queensland’s transportation infrastructure. These roles represent a chance to immerse yourself in a diverse array of legal issues, from corporate governance and commercial law to regulatory compliance, employment, and competition matters.

About the roles

As a Senior Legal Counsel, you will participate as a senior leader within the Queensland Rail LRP Team to ensure that it is a valued business partner providing proactive, commercially focused, high quality, strategic and timely legal solutions to enable Queensland Rail to be a modern world class railway. The roles will also support the General Counsel to establish and lead a high performing team with a culture which values safety, customer service, the environment and workplace diversity in line with Queensland Rail Values.

About you:

We are looking for:

  • Dynamic Legal Professionals: Individuals with a robust legal background, ready to navigate the complexities of the transportation sector and contribute to Queensland Rail’s strategic objectives.
  • Team Collaborators: Lawyers who excel in a team environment, bringing innovative solutions and a proactive approach to legal challenges.
  • Strategic Thinkers: Those who possess a sharp analytical mind, capable of foreseeing and mitigating legal risks while supporting the company’s vision and values.

Alongside our search for experienced generalist lawyers, we are also eager to receive applications from legal professionals who may have previously specialised in specific areas of legal practice. We value the depth of knowledge and expertise that specialists bring to our team, so if you have experience in any of the following areas, and are interested in applying your specialist knowledge in a broader legal role, we also welcome your application:

  • Legal Operations: As we navigate through a period of significant transformation, the efficiency and effectiveness with which our Legal Team supports its stakeholders are under review. We are in search of a lawyer who can spearhead this initiative, optimising our operations to meet the evolving needs of our business and stakeholders.
  • Human Resources/Industrial Relations: The complexities of employment law and the nuances of industrial relations are critical to the smooth operation of Queensland Rail, and we would welcome applications from lawyers with experience in this area.
  • Safety or Regulatory: Given the nature of Queensland Rail's operations, safety and regulatory compliance are paramount. We would welcome applications from any lawyers who have a deep understanding of the regulatory frameworks governing safety in the transportation industry, capable of guiding our practices and policies to not only meet but exceed statutory obligations.
  • Property: With significant holdings and ongoing property-related transactions specified members of the Legal Team will play a crucial role in managing our property portfolio, from acquisition and leasing to development and disposal.
  • Disputes: The ability to effectively manage and resolve disputes is fundamental to protecting Queensland Rail's interests and maintaining our reputation. A lawyer with specialised experience in dispute resolution and litigation would contribute to our team's ability to address conflicts constructively and strategically.

Pre-Employment Qualification: To be considered for this position, you must hold a current Practising Certificate in Queensland (or be able to obtain one) and will be required to provide a certified colour copy of your legal qualification before an offer can be extended.
