The Legal Division is responsible for the provision of all legal services and advice required by the department to deliver its functions and develop portfolio legislation. This includes the provision of strategic legal advice to the Secretary, the Executive and the business areas of the department.
The Legal Division is a large and diverse practice comprising three legal branches and is managed by the Chief Counsel. The division’s responsibilities include coordination of all external legal services and the provision of internal legal advice including in relation to;
- administrative law and statutory interpretation
- civil penalty litigation
- commercial law and contracts
- compliance and criminal law
- development of legislation
- employment law
- grants and funding
- information law, including privacy advice and freedom of information requests
- investigations and enforcement
- litigation and claims resolution
- regulatory law.

As a Senior Legal Officer you will provide high quality legal services in an in-house environment, including legal research, analysis and problem solving. Our highly engaged internal clients are comprised of regulatory scientists and administrative, policy and compliance officers who are passionate about safeguarding and growing sustainable agriculture, fisheries and forestry for Australians.
You will also be responsible, with your Principal Legal Officer, for motivating, mentoring and, supervising Legal Officers in your team to deliver on initiatives and goals whilst maintaining an inclusive, responsive and effective environment. A merit pool will be established for future opportunities.
Skills and Capabilities
You will be able to give practical legal advice clearly, concisely and in a way that meets your client’s needs. As an experienced and capable communicator, you will foster and build relationships as a trusted in-house adviser in a collaborative environment. You should demonstrate an ability to deal with sensitive matters that may affect the department, the Public Service and/or the broader community. You will have the capability to help lead and develop lawyers, and to manage requests for legal advice and projects efficiently and effectively.
Knowledge and experience
Ideally you will have a minimum of between 3 to 6 years of relevant post-admission experience and experience in one or more of the legal areas listed above.
Eligibility
To be eligible for these positions you are required to hold a degree in law and be eligible to hold an ACT legal practising certificate.
