The Role
The Senior Policy Officer will be responsible for supporting the negotiation of Security of Information Agreements and Arrangements (SIA) with international partners. This will include research and analysis of relevant legislation and policy frameworks to ensure SIA are fit-for-purpose.
To be successful, the Officer will need a deep understanding of the strategic operating environment to support the prioritisation of SIA that underpin Defence’s international engagement and delivery of the National Defence Strategy. The Officer will also work closely with team members to develop and maintain Defence foreign release policy and processes.
They will provide security policy advice to internal and external stakeholders across a range of complex matters, exercising judgement and critical thinking. They will also be responsible for developing briefing materials for senior leaders including ministerial products and executive correspondence to support Senate Estimates and senior committees.
About our Team
The International and Strategic Security Policy team plays an important role in supporting Defence’s international engagement and safeguarding Australia. The team is responsible for the establishment and maintenance of Security of Information Agreements and Arrangements (SIA).
SIA are formal commitments to apply reciprocal protections to classified information shared between international partners. SIA enable the exchange of classified information in support of operational activities, personnel exchanges, foreign military sales and major capability programs.
Effective information-sharing instruments are critical to achieve the National Defence Strategy outcomes including AUKUS initiatives and enhanced engagement in the Indo-Pacific.
