The South West Aboriginal Medical Service (SWAMS) is a non-Government Health Service based in Bunbury which provides a variety of health services to Aboriginal people in the South West of Western Australia. SWAMS delivers a wide range of community programs and has a strong growth strategy through partnership opportunities and future community development.
The Senior Policy Officer plays a crucial role in shaping SWAMS’ policies, procedures, and quality assurance functions within the Health and Social Services division. This position contributes to policy development, implementation, and evaluation, with a specific focus on children and young people in care, child protection, child-safe practices, and vulnerable families. Below is just a snapshot of the role:
- Develop, implement, and review policies related to children, young people in care, child protection, and family support.
- Maintain an expert awareness of relevant trends and issues nationally and internationally
- Ensure regular policy review and compliance with QA and audit requirements
- Undertake research, and develop position and discussion papers to inform policy responses
Essential Aspects and Criteria
- Demonstrated conceptual and analytical skills in developing policy documents
- Excellent verbal and written communications and experience in preparing policy or program documentation
- Ability to undertake research and analysis and provide high-quality briefings to inform decision making
- Ability to develop multi-level stakeholder engagement strategies to support the effective implementation of policy changes
- Contribute to complex projects and undertake the preparation of briefs, submissions, correspondence and reports
- Sound knowledge of current trends and issues in health and community services including those relevant to Aboriginal organisations
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal people
Desirable Criteria
- Aboriginality would be advantageous, but is not an essential requirement of the role
- Knowledge of Child Protection legislation, Out of Home Care and Child Safe Principles
- Experience in Community or Aboriginal Health
