Job description

Shore is a leading Anglican Day and Boarding School, emphasising excellence in academic, cultural and sporting pursuits and fostering integrity in moral and spiritual development in a Christian environment.  Established in 1889 as a leading comprehensive school for the education of boys, Shore welcomed girls to the Early Learning Centre and K, 1, 2 Preparatory School at its Northbridge Campus in 2003. The rich history and traditions of Shore have powerfully shaped the School, fostering a sense of community and belonging.

The Psychologist will work closely with the School Counselling Team and other key staff who monitor the pastoral care and academic progress of students in providing counselling services for students, support for parents, teachers and the School Executive to reach the best possible outcomes for students.

This is a full-time position in the Senior School reporting to the Head of Counselling.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Provides psychological assessment, general counselling and support for students to enhance their social, behavioural, emotional and academic development and overall wellbeing.
  • Clinically supports and manages students at risk, liaising with emergency services and/or other government mandated services, family, other key stakeholders and service providers in the care and protection of individual students where needed.
  • Works closely and liaises with other key staff involved in the pastoral care and academic progress of students including the Deputy Head – Pastoral, Academic Support Team, Year Coordinators, Housemasters, Head of Boarding Houses, Tutors, Class Teachers, Health Centre Staff and the School Chaplin to ensure appropriate intervention, care and support for students.
  • Supports student, parents and carers to access appropriate supports withing the school environment and/or external intervention and support services according to individual needs.
  • Liaises and consults with external health care providers in relation to the ongoing care and management of a student at school within appropriate confidentiality guidelines.
  • Collaborates in the development, delivery and evaluation of preventative mental health, wellbeing programs and applied positive psychology approaches in the school community.
  • Contributes to research and the production of resources for the school community as needed.
  • Adheres to and complies with the School’s Policies and Procedures for Critical Incident management within the School community.
  • Adheres to and complies with the School’s Policies and Procedures for mandatory reporting consistent with Child Protection Legislation.
  • Participates where possible in the life of the School and School Community
  • Supports and participates in the Christian ethos of the School.
  
To be successful in this role you will have worked in a similar position as a counsellor in a School or Community based environment. You will have an understanding and be up to date on current issues facing children and adolescents in areas of mental health and other issues facing adolescents. This position will work within a broader team to ensure the needs of our students are met. We are looking for an exceptional communicator with a passion for inclusion who strives to ensure the very best experience for all students. Ideally this position will commence as soon as the successful applicant is available.
  
Experience/Qualifications:
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in a school setting or mental health environment.
  • Appropriate qualifications in Psychology and Counselling
  • Registration as a Psychologist or Clinical Psychologist with AHPRA
  • A demonstrated high level of competence and confidence in managing matters relating to child protection, mandatory reporting and risk of significant harm
  • A current Working with Children Check or the willingness to obtain one
  • Awareness of the needs of students in an all-boys school environment
  • The ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • The ability to give attention to details in record keeping and clinical follow up
  • A commitment to ongoing professional development and learning
