What You'll be DoingThe Mental Health Senior Research Officer (MHSRO) plays a central role in providing high-level support to the Director and research groups within the South Western Sydney Mental Health Research Unit in promoting, facilitating, developing and overseeing research in SWSLHD Mental Health Services (MHS). Undertaking a key supporting role in progressing the strategic vision for research as per the MHS Research Strategy.

The MHSRO may play an active role in leadership within the MHS Research and Practice Committee, supervision, assisting in managing large number of research grants, and project, coordinating research funding schemes and opportunities, providing supervision and advice to MHS staff on research mentorship, methods, responding to research enquiries, contributing to research ethics and governance processes, devising and implementing statistical analyses, presenting findings and interpreting the results. MHSRO will foster collaboration in research within the LHD as well as nationally and internationally. This is a MHS district role and will be instrumental in guiding the MHS towards meeting the requirements of the SWSLHD Research Strategy.

How to ApplyTo be considered for this position, please ensure you address the below questions as thoroughly as possible. View our application guide for information on how to respond to criteria and improve your application.
  1. A PhD degree or Post-graduate degree in science or an equivalent discipline in health, behavioural or social science, and demonstrated relevant experience and/or training. Holds a Good Clinical Practice (GCP) approved training certificate or willing to obtain with an agreed timeframe.
  2. Demonstrated experience in multivariate statistical analysis and the capacity to oversee databases and proficiency in analysing data by using relevant packages, for example, SAS, STATA, SPSS, M-PLUS, MLwiN, NVivo or equivalent programs and/or demonstrated evidence of a capacity to master these programs with further training.
  3. Demonstrated experience in health and medical research environment in Australia and related legislation, codes and guidelines relevant to clinical trials, research ethics, and data management, including the NHMRC National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research, relevant privacy acts and guidelines, the Human Tissue Act.
  4. A proven ability to support teams in attracting substantial external research funding (including funding from competitive grant schemes), have capacity to produce high-level reports for refereed journal publication of high repute in relevant disciplines, and summaries/ briefings to non-technical audiences.
  5. Demonstrated high level oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, such as negotiation and report writing applicable in both a research and administrative context.
  6. Excellent organisational, analytical, and complex problem-solving skills with capacity to effectively manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines in timely manners while maintaining high-level detail and quality.
  7. Strong computer literacy and competency in the use of Microsoft applications and other relevant software programs (e.g., word processing, data management systems, research ethics and governance management systems and spreadsheets)
  8. Must possess a valid Australian Drivers Licence (excluding learner driver's licences). If not already in possession, a NSW Drivers Licence must be obtained within 3 months of appointment and willingness to travel in the course of employment.
