About UNSW IT and the role:

UNSW IT, part of the Operations Division at UNSW, plays a critical role in enabling and supporting the University’s teaching, research, and industry engagements. We are seeking a Senior Network Engineer to help deliver and transform network services provided to the UNSW community. Are you ready to make a difference in higher education?

This role offers a unique opportunity to work on a large, diverse enterprise network with technologies from market-leading vendors such as Cisco, Juniper, HPE Aruba, NVIDIA, Palo Alto Networks, f5 Networks, and Infoblox. Your expertise will be instrumental in supporting and transforming the network services that underpin the university’s ambitious goals of being a world leader in research and education. This position reports to the manager Network Services.

What You Will Do:

  • Network Engineering: Design and implement reliable, secure, and efficient network solutions to meet customer requirements. You will be involved in various projects for up to half of your time.
  • Network Operations and Management: Provide high-level support to ensure network services SLAs are met and reliability is maximized. This includes proactive monitoring, implementing customer requests, troubleshooting, performing upgrades, and managing risks, issues, and costs.
  • After Hours Support: Provide on-call after-hours network support on a rotating basis, typically one week in five, as well as weekend and after-hours work as required. On-call allowances and overtime will be paid.
  • Network Consultation: Offer expert-level advice to customers, colleagues, and other stakeholders on engineering, operating, and management of the Network environment.
  • Support Leadership and Innovation: Provide technical leadership in evaluating, developing, and implementing new network solutions. Support the Team Leader in optimizing team practices and driving continuous improvement.
  • Collaboration and Influence: Work closely with stakeholders across the university to ensure network solutions align with institutional objectives.

Who You Are:

  • Educated and Experienced: Tertiary qualification in Computer Technology or a related field, bolstered by extensive industry experience implementing and supporting networks in large-scale IT environments.
  • Expert in Network Technologies: Deep understanding and hands-on experience with:
    • Campus network access (Aruba, Cisco & Juniper)
    • Network hosting including Data Centre and Cloud networking (NVIDIA/Cumulus/Mellanox, Cisco, Juniper, f5, Infoblox, AWS/Azure/GCP, Aviatrix)
    • Secure Remote Access (Palo Alto Networks, Prisma Access)
    • Internet and Core Networking (BGP, EVPN, 100G networking, dark fibre and telco services)
    • Network security (Palo Alto Networks, Cisco, Aruba ClearPass, DDoS protection)
    • Network services (Infoblox DNS, DHCP, NTP)
    • Network management (IPAM, monitoring, out-of-band administration, configuration management, logging, backup/restore)
  • Security and Reliability Savvy: Solid background in building secure and reliable network infrastructure and services.
  • Network Automation Advocate: Skilled in network automation technologies (Git, Python, Ansible, intent-driven automation) to build reliable network services and improve operational efficiency.
  • Certified Professional: Relevant certifications affirming your technical proficiency.
  • Excellent Communicator and Collaborator: Ability to simplify complex technical ideas for diverse audiences and work effectively across teams.
  • Problem Solver: Strong analytical skills and strategic decision-making capabilities.
  • Lifelong Learner: Committed to ongoing professional development, staying at the forefront of industry trends and emerging technologies.
