In the role of Senior Town Planner you will provide high level statutory, land-use and town planning advice in relation to transport planning undertaken by the department including the provision of specialist advice in respect to the application of the Planning Act (2016) and Transport Infrastructure Act (1994) and other statutory instruments.

Accountabilities include:

  • Lead and supervise statutory land-use and transport planning tasks for the corridor management team (town planners) including development assessment and compliance.
  • Provide high-level advice and assistance on the Planning Act 2016, the Transport Infrastructure Act 1994 and other statutory instruments applicable to the Department in respect to land use and transport planning matters.
  • Review state and local government planning documents to assess their implications for Transport and Main Roads, and providing response to those documents on behalf of the District.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate and effective liaison and communication with internal staff, state and local government agencies, the community and other stakeholders relating to road infrastructure development activities.
  • Provide timely, high-level written and oral advice on town planning matters relating to the safety and efficiency of the transport network.
  • Review, analyse and interpret legislation relevant standards, policy and guidelines and provide advice on legislative and transport planning implications related to road and transport infrastructure.
  • Ensure the application of relevant standards, policies, guidelines and legislative requirements in respect to development assessments and transport planning within the Corridor Management team..
  • Influence outcomes and represent the department on working groups, steering committees and Whole of Government meetings for both state and local governments.
  • Prepare ministerial correspondence, briefs and reports for the District Director and/or district office and/or department as required.
This role reports to Principal Advisor (Corridor Management).

Mandatory requirements:
  • A Degree in Town Planning or in another profession relevant to this role which is acceptable by the Planning Institute of Australia.
  • Current holder of a 'C' class driver's licence.
  • It is a condition of employment for recommended appointee/s to disclose any previous serious discipline action taken against them for consideration by the delegate prior to any appointment.
Desirable requirements:
  • Knowledge and experience in development assessment, with a particular focus on state and local government requirements.
  • A general understanding of traffic impacts associated with development.
  • Knowledge and experience in strategic land use planning such as Priority Development Areas, Infrastructure Designations and Local Government Planning Scheme amendments.
  • Good general town planning experience, with a focus on transport planning and sustainable development.
