The Senior Varroa Development Officer (SVDO) performs a key role within Agriculture Victoria's apiary team. The SVDO will deliver engagement across all areas of Varroa mite management to commercial and recreational beekeepers to extend best management practice guidelines. You will assist in equipping beekeepers with the skills and capability to effectively manage Varroa as an endemic bee pest.
The position will be required to build beekeeper capability to manage Varroa mite through hands on engagement and may directly support the national training and education program as a trainer. You will work alongside the Bee Biosecurity Officer and other apiary staff in a complementary manner. This will involve attendance at bee club and association meetings to promote Varroa mite surveillance and management practices.
The role will focus on actively engaging with beekeepers around hive health monitoring and will contribute to a national beekeeper driven hive health monitoring approach that will be used to gather critical data to refine the best management recommendations for Varroa mite based on regional differences. The role may also be required to support Victorian industries through the development of best practice control regulations for the ongoing control of varroa mite.
This role has been created as part of the National Transition to Management Plan (T2M) and is overseen by the National Varroa T2M Coordination Group.
