About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Clinical Lead - Newman, the Child Health Nurse is responsible for increasing the reporting, testing and treatment of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI’s) and Blood Borne Viruses (BBV’s) within Newman and the four remote communities (Parnngurr, Jigalong, Punmu and Kunawarritji) serviced by Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service (PAMS)

About You

To be considered for this position, you must have:

  • Current Registration as a Registered Nurse with Australian Heath Practitioner Health Agency; 
  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Sexual Health nursing and/or minimum of two years previous experience working in a Sexual Health Nurse or similar role;
  • Have the South Australian Understanding Vaccines and National Immunisation Program Certificate and annual updates since completion or be willing to complete within 6 weeks of commencement in the role;
  • Integrate STI testing into routine primary health care, including adult health checks;
  • Provide evidence-based STI/BBV clinical management, including testing, treatment, contact tracing, and follow-up for symptomatic clients and their contacts;
  • Follow the Silverbook WA STI/BBV management guidelines, the CARPA Manual, and the National program guidelines for Point of Care Syphilis testing;
  • Collaborate with Aboriginal Health Practitioners or Community Engagement Workers to enhance culturally competent contact tracing processes;
  • Use point of care technology for testing Syphilis, Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, and Trichomonas;
  • Support other clinical staff in integrating Sexual Health care into their roles;
  • Serve as a clinical resource for the health team and engage in partnerships, planning, and management activities;
  • Previous experience working in a remote primary health care setting with a demonstrated ability to effectively and culturally appropriately engage with Aboriginal communities;
  • Demonstrated understanding of the unique issues effecting and impacting upon the health of Aboriginal children and families;
  • Sound understanding of the principles of primary health care and the model of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service;
  • Sound written and verbal communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team to achieve agreed goals and deadlines.
  • Knowledge and experience in the provision of health programs;
  • An ability to work, reside and travel independently in a remote region;
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team, as well as independently when required;
  • Sound working knowledge of computer software packages including Communicare;
  • Willingness to assist with general remote area nursing duties across all areas of the life-span including undertaking first and second on call duties as required;
  • Previous experience undertaking program reporting against performance deliverables;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The position involves working with a multicultural organisation where the majority of staff, clients and stakeholders identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Candidates must be able to demonstrate an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

This position offers the opportunity to work closely with remote Aboriginal communities and make a drastic impact to the health and well-being outcomes of these communities.

PAMS operates five sites, four of which are remote and managed by a team of clinicians and a range of ancillary workers. Although the successful candidates will have a substantive location (Newman) they must be prepared from time to time to work across any one of these sites should they be required.

PAMS operates in some of the most remote parts of Australia and staff are required to be proficient at driving a 4WD vehicle and willing to fly in light aircraft.

About the Organisation

With an administrative hub based in Newman, in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, The Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service (PAMS) provides holistic primary health care to the individuals and families within Newman and the remote communities of Jigalong, Parnngurr, Punmu and Kunawarritji.

PAMS has over 700 registered clients, with most being Martu. Services offered include health education and promotion programs and initiatives, as well as the monitoring and management of ongoing health issues such as diabetes, hypertension, ante-natal & post-natal care and child health
