The Cargo and Trade Systems Section is responsible for providing reliable and resilient production support for Cargo, Trade and Border ICT applications. The section supports these critical systems by delivering changes and releases to an agreed work program with internal and external stakeholders. This work program includes system enhancements in support of projects and the provision of Business As Usual (BAU) production support and services.
Our ideal candidate
The Department is looking for Software Developers who:
- Enjoy learning new technologies; keen to develop technical expertise to maintain and enhance large enterprise platforms
- Are able to quickly understand how existing applications have been built by reviewing source code, accessing system documentation, and engaging with other developers in the support team
- Have excellent problem solving skills and the ability to diagnose issues in complex systems
- Work collaboratively within a team environment, engaging effectively with business areas and other relevant internal and external stakeholders
- Are self-driven and seek to directly influence the key outcomes of the organisation.
Duties and responsibilities
- Writing and maintaining program code to meet system requirements, system designs and technical specifications in accordance with quality accredited standards
- Testing, debugging, diagnosing and correcting errors and faults in an applications programming language within established testing protocols, guidelines and quality standards to ensure programs and applications perform to specification
- Support, troubleshooting, root cause analysis and remediation of Production Systems (out of hours support may be required)
- In collaboration with senior developers and architects, assist with researching, consulting, analysing and evaluating system program needs
- Identifying technology limitations and deficiencies in existing systems and associated processes, procedures and methods.

Role requirements/qualifications:
- Translate business requirements into functional and technical specifications
- Experience in developing and maintaining IT solutions
- Good problem solving skills and the ability to diagnose problems and weaknesses in existing solutions.
Develop technical solutions and progress through environments following system development lifecycle (analysis, design, build, test, and release).
Experience or exposure to any one or more of the following streams is desirable:
- Mainframe programming languages and application development suites including but not limited to JCL, CICS, COBOL, DB2, REXX and CA Gen Technology.
- Azure DevOps (Boards, Repos, Pipelines)
- .Net Framework and C#
- Microsoft Visual Studio
- ASP.NET/Html/CSS/JavaScript
- Java
- Spring
- Struts with JSP (Java Server Pages)
- Javascript / Typescript / Angular / React
- SQL Server/Oracle Database
- Source Control / Git.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.
The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (AGSVA) security clearance and an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
