If you are a graduate speech pathologist, this pool is an opportunity for you to express your interest in Speech Pathology working in the North East Metropolitan Language Development Centre or in the Speech Pathologist in Schools Pilot.

Students graduating in 2023 are encouraged to apply.

We are seeking to establish a pool for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which are immediately available or may arise during the 2023 and 2024 school year. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2022, 2023 and 2024 school year.

Who can apply?

You can apply to this pool if you:

  • are in your final semester of study in a Tertiary qualification of Bachelor of Speech Pathology
  • have graduated with a Bachelor of Speech Pathology or equivalent

North East Metropolitan Language Development Centre (NEMLDC) is seeking enthusiastic Speech and Language Officers with a Speech Pathology qualification to work either at the NEMLDC or as part of the Speech Pathologists in Schools Pilot (SPIS)

What do we do?

The NEMLDC is a specialist school for children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). We provide specialist speech, language and academic intervention for children from Kindergarten to Year 2. Staff members work in a collaborative team that includes teachers, speech pathologists, school psychologists, education assistants and the administration staff.

NEMLDC placed Speech and Language Officers will be required to work across all campuses of the NEMLDC (West Morley, North Balga and Beechboro) and will be supported by a team of speech pathologists.

The SPIS provides schools the opportunity to have a Department employed Speech Pathologist on staff. Schools nominate to participate in the program. There are several schools currently awaiting a Speech Pathologist. Speech Pathologists are employed and supported as Speech and Language Officers by the NEMLDC.

SPIS placed Speech and Language Officers are appointed to schools across the North Metropolitan Region. The NEMLDC will work with suitable applicants to determine their suitability to the School, considering experience, interest and location. The SPIS Speech and Language Specialist develops and supports the implementation of specialised language programs for students with Speech and Language difficulties providing negotiated direct and indirect services within a Tiers of Intervention model. A key aspect of the role is building the capacity of Teachers and Education Assistants to ensure they have the knowledge and skills to maximise language learning outcomes for students. SPIS Speech Pathologists are provided support from a Senior Speech and Language Officer, as well as collegiate support.

Position preference will be discussed with suitable applicants.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Experience in developing Speech and Language/literacy policy and programs and knowledge of latest trends and research in Speech and Language development.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and review Speech and Language/literacy programs.
  • Ability to provide specialised Speech and Language services and support to students with Speech and Language impairments.
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills, including the demonstrated ability to prepare reports and prepare and deliver professional development programs.
  • Ability to monitor and evaluate language impaired students’ progress both individually and in the context of language/literacy programs.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills that demonstrate an ability to function in a self-directed way, and as a member of an interdisciplinary team in an educational and/or community setting.

ELIGIBILITY AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

Employees will be required to:

  • possess a Tertiary qualification of Bachelor of Speech Pathology or equivalent, and eligibility for membership of the Speech Pathology Association of Australia
  • obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal Cultural Appreciation course; and
  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
