Job description

  • Join a uniquely collaborative school environment providing learning opportunities for additional needs children!
  • Step away from strict KPIs, billable hours and intensive reporting requirements!
  • Great salary circa $73,163-$105,676 plus super and school holidays off!
  • Be part of a large supportive multidisciplinary team looking after a small caseload and create unique solutions to support students communication and mealtime needs.

Broadmeadows Special Developmental School is a school catering to ages 5-18, and offers a unique and dynamic work environment dedicated to the growth and development of students with additional needs. With modern campuses in Melbourne, our focus on communication development, personalised learning plans, and collaborative partnerships with families set us apart. By joining our team, you will have the opportunity to make a profound and meaningful impact on the lives of our exceptional students.

At Broadmeadows SDS, our multidisciplinary education and allied health team work together to prioritise effective communication and personalised learning. Through individualised plans, we address students' unique strengths and challenges, fostering a sense of belonging and empowering them to reach their full potential. With strong partnerships with families, we create a supportive and inclusive environment where every individual can flourish and thrive.

Join us in creating a remarkable educational journey for our exceptional students.

The Opportunity

We are currently looking for Speech Pathologists to join our multidisciplinary classroom team full-time in a truly unique allied health role. At Broadmeadows SDS, we have classes of five to seven students grouped by their age, and we currently have vacancies across multiple age groups.

Our primary years (ages 5 - 12) include classes focusing on foundational skills and knowledge, with hands-on learning opportunities created in collaboration between our teachers and allied health professionals.

The secondary years (ages 13 - 18) include classes that focus on navigating the world as a young adult, and after. We provide English, Reading, Writing, Maths, and Health and Physical Education.

All of our classrooms have a dedicated teacher and teacher assistant, as well as Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, and Speech Pathologists who all work together to create lesson plans that will help students with their individual and group goals and milestones. As one of our Speech Pathologists, you will work closely with teachers to assess students and support their communication and mealtime needs.  Therapists collaborate with teachers to adapt programs and integrate therapy recommendations into everyday class routines and programs.

At Broadmeadows Special Development School, our collaborative and multidisciplinary approach sets us apart and makes this a unique opportunity for you. Your caseload will be small, and you will spend your time working with teachers and other allied health professionals to discuss, problem-solve and develop creative ways to support students throughout their day.

The classroom team will communicate with parents through daily ‘communication journals’, weekly photo books showcasing what students have been doing, phone call updates and parent workshops on a variety of topics.

Across our school environment, you will find opportunities for collaboration with other health professionals and educators as you are supported from all sides. We provide any necessary support to help you do your job as effectively as possible, including only having meetings necessary - no weekly whole staff meetings here! You will find a friendly environment where all of our team can lean on each other for support, and have regular social catch-ups as well.

Remuneration and Benefits

When you join Broadmeadows Special Developmental School, you will receive an attractive salary of $73,163-$105,676 plus super commensurate with experience and great benefits.

Benefits include:

  • Relocation assistance negotiable up to $9,000
  • Only work when school is in session, but be paid for the whole year!
  • A well-resourced school with all therapy and curriculum tools you could want to be provided
  • Laptop provided
  • Large, supportive multi-disciplinary team, 12+ Speech pathologists
  • A celebratory culture where you get to champion students’ milestones
  • Free coffee and lunches for planning days
  • Friendly and social staff with a great Christmas party and regular social events

We provide support for graduates looking for a meaningful Speech Pathologist opportunity, and we are open to sponsorship for candidates with recognised allied health qualifications (acquired in the US, Canada, UK, or Ireland).

About You

As one of our allied health professionals, you will be a qualified Speech Pathologist, with previous demonstrated experience in the field. You will be passionate about working with additional needs children and/or in an educational setting.

While previous work experience as a Speech Pathologist is an advantage, as long as you have the right attitude and the willingness to learn, we want to hear from you!

You will have:

  • Degree in Speech Pathology
  • Strong passion for working with additional needs children
  • High-level written and verbal English communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills with parents and colleagues
  • Demonstrated ability to provide creative and unique therapeutic solutions

Please note: If you are a candidate coming from overseas, you will be required to undergo the following qualification assessment: Overseas Qualification Assessment (speechpathologyaustralia.org.au)
