Location Profile

Belvoir Special School is a multi-mode specialist school in Wodonga which provides a high quality educational program for students with mild, moderate and profound intellectual disabilities. Around 45% of our students have a co-morbid diagnosis of Autism as well as an intellectual disability.  Many students also have a level of Physical disability.  Students range in age from five to eighteen years of age.

 In 2014 the school moved to a brand new purpose built facility which has been constructed for a peak enrolment of around 220 students.  Current student population is 200. 

To attend the school students must meet the state-wide eligibility criteria and are enrolled at Belvoir Special School after consultation with parents, previous schools or kindergartens and appropriate paramedic personnel if needed, in accordance with the school¿s documented enrolment policy.

 Our school¿s philosophy is reflected in its programs and based on the belief that children learn best in a co-operative environment that is happy, challenging, supportive and non-threatening. Belvoir is a School Wide Positive Behaviour Support School and has developed a school culture that is reflected by the ideals of SW-PBS.

Selection Criteria

SC 1: Experience and sound knowledge of speech pathology techniques and the ability to develop, provide and evaluate speech pathology services and provide specialist advise on appropriate intervention strategies.

SC 2: Demonstrated capacity to work as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary professional team and contribute significantly to the achievements of the team.

SC 3: Ability to design and deliver professional learning, preferably for teachers and other relevant professionals, in the area of language and communication.

SC 4: Demonstrated ability to deliver a comprehensive speech pathology service to students and families including speech and language assessment and reporting the provision of advice on program delivery.

SC 5: Commitment of ongoing professional development.

Role

To provide speech pathology services to students with mild, moderate or severe intellectual disabilities within an educational setting.

 Demonstrate and model excellent teaching and learning strategies which will assist teachers to facilitate a high level of success with students with additional needs.

To assist with the supervision of students in the playground, on excursions and during therapy sessions.

 A comprehensive knowledge of speech pathology and provide quality support to the school.

Develop, implement and evaluate individual learning programs for students with additional needs.

To be an active member of the allied health team.

Oversee the speech resources.

Support the literacy program within the school.

Be flexible and willing to implement areas in the Annual Implementation Plan and Strategic Plan.

Have a knowledge of whole school literacy programs and assist in overseeing there implementation across the school.

Responsibilities

Assessments of student 5 years to 18 years with communication difficulties

Planning and implementing appropriate programs to meet the needs of students with communication difficulties including whole class group and 1:1work.

Liaising with and counselling parents regarding their children's communication difficulties and remedial program options.

Consulting with teachers and assistants to assist with the integration of communication programs within the classroom

Working with other therapists to plan and implement communication, eating and drinking programs.

In-service staff and parents on speech language programs and initiatives

Assessment and reporting writing for individual students for funding under the PSD program

Working with students using communication devices including applications and classroom programs

Attending appropriate meetings - Section, staff, network.

Attend professional development

Preparation and monitoring of an annual budget

Carry out responsibilities as directed by Leadership.
