Job description

Delta has a long history in the Australian energy markets. As the market is changing so is Delta. Delta is positioning itself to be the leading asset-backed trading business in the Australian energy markets. To do this, Delta will leverage strong analytic capability and information flow from its management of energy assets to trade power and carbon products across all the NEM States. Over time Delta will expand its capability to other energy related commodities.

The Role 

The role of Spot Trader is responsible for actively delivering Delta’s spot market strategies, optimising earnings by proactively responding to changing market conditions, whilst ensuring compliance with market regulations and Delta’s risk policies. To act as a real time interface between the market operators and Delta operations ensuring high quality information flow and understanding between the entities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operations
    • Execute comprehensive bidding strategies.
    • Continuously monitor market conditions and adjust the bidding strategies as needed.
    • Prepare daily dispatch offers for the energy, ancillary services.
    • Re-offer dispatch volumes within limited timeframes.
    • Work closely with the asset operations team to ensure the optimal balance between plant and market risk.
    • Liaise with AEMO on Delta’s market dispatch and all matters relating to the short-term operation of the plant.
    • Perform ‘on-call’ duties outside working hours and on weekends, including all spot market trading activities and liaison with AEMO and power station operations staff.
    • Monitor and report market events, market operations and competitive behaviour.
  • Governance
    • Ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
    • Open and honest reporting of compliance and governance risk.
  • Strategic
    • Support the development of long term and short-term trading and regulatory strategies.

Who We Are Looking For (Selection criteria)

It is expected that the successful applicant will have:

  1. Tertiary qualifications at a minimum of Degree level in Engineering, Science, Business, Finance, Economics or related field or equivalent qualifications.
  2. Knowledge and experience working in the National Electricity Market, within a competitive financial market or trading environment.
  3. Knowledge of the National Electricity Market (NEM), market trading environments and associated risk management principles.
  4. Demonstrated the ability to interpret complex market and asset data and make informed, data-driven decisions.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work under pressure to make critical decisions with limited information and tight time constraints.
  6. Knowledge of regulatory requirements and a commitment to maintaining compliance within the energy spot market.
  7. Well developed communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
