The Role

The Staff Mechatronics Engineer is responsible for a wide variety of investigative research and pilot technology development, advancing Stryker capabilities and supporting the long-term strategy of the R&D Lab. The Staff Mechatronics Engineer provides technical skills, innovative thinking, and collaborative support, while engaging with Stryker divisions and University partners to deliver new technologies and platforms.

What you will do

  • Collaborate with R&D team, marketing partners and clinicians to progress an iterative design process that executes user research, identifies user needs and generates innovative solutions to meet those needs.
  • Work on and lead cross-functional design teams to develop new products from concept through to product development, engaging key internal stakeholders along the way.
  • Interface with clinical advisors to gather input for design and evaluation of new products, translating user needs into design requirements.  
  • Partner with Research team in reviewing clinical research and literature review. Gather input for design and evaluation of new products.
  • Facilitate cadaver labs for pre-clinical testing and product evaluations
  • Plan and conduct engineering research, design, development and/or manufacturing engineering projects as assigned, using agile methodology. Perform a wide variety of technical work which will lead to new or improved products/product lines/technology platforms.
  • Understand and utilize design controls within the New Product Development Process (NPDP) to support in the review and authorship of NPDP documentation.
  • Effectively communicate new product ideas to all levels of the organisation.

Critical Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering field required. Masters or PHD preferred.
  • Cross functional engineering experience (mechatronics, software, electrical, design)
  • 4+ years of clinical or product design experience in the medical device industry.
  • Excellent analytical skills, demonstrated systems thinking ability and experience working across software, mechanical and electrical subsystems.
  • Demonstrated software/mechanical/electrical design problem-solving skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to present issues, plans and objectives.
  • Ability to work within multi-disciplinary teams, including stakeholders from multiple institutions.
  • Working knowledge of CAD modeling/design software (e.g. Solidworks), electrical design software (e.g. Altium), and applicable programming languages (esp. C++, MATLAB/Python).
  • Experience with prototyping and system troubleshooting, as well as system validation and documentation.
  • Motivated, resourceful, ambitious, enthusiastic and attentive to detail.
  • Demonstrated technical impact on a design project or product platform.
