Our Attendance Policy of 90%, close monitoring of student absences, and effective communication with parents ensure that the importance of regular attendance for successful student learning is well embedded in the school culture.

The SEAL (Select Entry Accelerated Learning) program is offered to challenge and motivate gifted and talented students from Year 7 right through to Year 12. Additionally, enrichment electives are offered from Year 9, and VCE subjects are available to selected students from Year 10. Our top achievers are supported with scholarships, as well as university mentoring programs including the Kwong Lee Dow Scholars¿ program, and they consistently gain entry into top level tertiary courses.

A focus on positive, respectful relationships as an essential part of a safe, enjoyable learning environment is an essential aspect of the College's culture, as is our strategy of enhancing student voice and leadership across the school, and providing a rich extracurricular program. Activities include a comprehensive instrumental music program, drama and music production, public speaking and debating, writers' workshops, a camps program, sports teams and carnivals, a House system, and a range of student clubs.

Our vision for wellbeing is to support all members of our school community to develop a resilient mindset by striving to ensure that everyone feels Connected, Protected and Respected. The development of a comprehensive allied health team approach to student wellbeing, recent work on resilient mindsets, and further strengthening student wellbeing programs have been important in fostering engagement, positive behaviour, and respectful relationships.

Selection Criteria

1.     A demonstrated ability to engender teamwork and to contribute to a broad range of student wellbeing and school activities.

2.     Demonstrated high level interpersonal and communication skills as evidenced by constructive relationships with parents, staff and students.

3.     A highly developed ability to design, implement and evaluate strength-based student engagement programs.

4.     Demonstrated high level organisational and time management skills.

5.     Appropriate tertiary qualifications and/or experience in Welfare, Community Services, Youth Work or other related fields.

6.     A strong understanding of, and a proven ability to, connect with and engage African Australian and/or Pasifika families.

Role

Under the guidance of the Assistant Principal, the Student and Family Engagement Officer will be responsible for the delivery, and review of programs to increase engagement between students, families and the school. This role has a specific focus on supporting students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds (CALD), particularly African Australian and Pasifika students and families. This involves the development and facilitation of engagement strategies and programs, liaison with staff, parents and external service providers and providing individual support to students and their families with the aim of maximising educational outcomes and increasing student attendance.

Responsibilities

1.     Support identified students to engage in education and strengthen their attendance. Primarily this will be through maintaining a caseload of students and providing short to medium term interventions to support students and their families to engage with the school and support the young person to improve their schooling outcomes. This work will involve meeting regularly with identified students to provide mentoring and develop individual strength-based plans and goals which are regularly monitored and reviewed.

2.     Develop, implement, and evaluate strength-based intervention strategies/programs including facilitating groups and school activities to support identified students to access the school curriculum and engage in schooling. This will include providing a lunchtime proactive program for targeted students and may include partnering with external partners to deliver programs.

3.     Liaise regularly with families of identified students to support them to assist their children attend school regularly and achieve positive schooling outcomes. This will include an onsite family sessions/group with CALD community groups.

4.     Conduct home visits with the Wellbeing Team to support student and Family Engagement at the College.

5.     Support the Wellbeing Team and Sub School Teams to monitor the social, emotional and learning progress of students and provide reports to these teams and administration by attending Sub School weekly meetings, key contact meetings and wellbeing meetings.

6.     Become part of the SSG Membership for identified students.

7.     Support the wellbeing team in the lunch and breakfast program as an avenue to strengthen connections with vulnerable students.

8.     Actively work to strengthen the connections between the school and different cultural groups within the College community.

9.     Liaise effectively with external service providers and assist families to access their services

10.   Work alongside the Wellbeing Team Programs Officer to help develop targeted programs and interventions that support students and families, and strengthen connections with the College through fostering school and family partnerships.

11.   Other duties as directed by the Principal
