Job description

Yalari is seeking a Student Support Officer on a permanent part time basis to work with our Yalari scholarship students for 13 hours per week.

About Us

For nearly two decades, Yalari has been changing the lives of Indigenous children from remote and regional communities, by providing scholarships to Australia’s leading boarding schools.

As of 2024, we proudly support 250 students on their boarding school journey at 20 partner schools, alongside over 500 accomplished alumni who've made their mark across the nation.

Explore our mission at www.yalari.org.

The Role

Working remotely as part of the Student Support team you will be responsible for providing regular and ongoing support to scholarship students assigned to the position. Most of your hours will be face to face with students both on and off school campus where you will encourage and support students to reflect Yalari’s core values and provide educational, social, and emotional support within a framework of increasing independence, relevant to the age of the student.

You will need to develop strong working relationships with key stakeholders including parents/ guardians and partner school staff. This position requires some administration including case management, reporting and record keeping, and writing student updates periodically – all of which will be carried out in your home office.

Student Support Officers are integral to the success of the Yalari program. Our independent partner schools perform a vital role in providing opportunities for students to acquire knowledge and understanding, pursue special interests, strive to achieve excellence, and develop social and vocational skills. Having the ability to work closely and effectively with our partner schools while remaining independent is paramount in this role.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is someone who can quickly build rapport with various stakeholders including young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, their parents, and staff at our Partner Schools. You will have demonstrated experience working effectively with young people and dealing with challenging situations and circumstances. We are looking for someone who can communicate broadly, work remotely while staying connected to the rest of the team, and organise workflow efficiently. You will need computer literacy including the ability to use Microsoft SharePoint and other online database tools. A ‘can do’ attitude, sense of humour and ability to problem-solve are essential.

This role comes with a degree of flexibility to benefit both staff members and students. The ideal candidate is someone who is highly organised and can be flexible enough to meet immediate needs as they arise.

Additional Requirements of the position:

  • Availability to work outside of business hours. Most of the contracted hours will be afterschool, evenings, and weekends.
  • Availability to attend training, development and team building sessions at Yalari Head Office (Gold Coast) four times each year.
  • Full availability of contracted hours in the first and last week of all school terms and for the Yalari Orientation Camp held on the Gold Coast (one week) in mid-January each year.
  • Hold, or have the ability to hold a current Working with Children Card and National Police check.
  • Have a non-restricted driver’s license with a good driving record and use of your own vehicle with full comprehensive insurance.
  • Capacity to establish a home office with travel to partner school(s) as a routine part of the position. The vast majority of contracted hours require face to face interaction with students at their boarding school(s).

How to apply

Please submit your resume and a one-page cover letter, addressing the above criteria, telling us a little about yourself and why you are interested in this position. Applications will need to follow this process to be considered.

You will have full rights to work in Australia. Appointment to this position is subject to passing a mandatory Working with Children Check and a National Police Check.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are encouraged to apply.

Applications will be closed as soon as suitable candidates are identified.
