This is a permanent full-time position commencing Term 3, 2024 

This is a fantastic opportunity for a highly effective and motivated person to join our growing Student Services team at Gilmore College. The position presents an opportunity to work alongside the three Program Coordinators: Student Services and Year Coordinators in providing information and guidance to students, staff, and parents, with a view to contributing to improved student relationships, regular attendance and effective Student Support services and programs.

While the successful applicant will hold a key role in assisting in developing and introducing systems and intervention strategies which provide culturally responsive and effective support service for students, family members and staff of Mauri and Pacific Island heritage, it is seen as ideal if applicants can work effectively with all students in our culturally diverse school.

We are ideally looking for a Student Support Officer who, models a belief that they can “transform positive relationships into meeting the unique learning potential of every student.” The role of Student Support Officer would require you to assist with administrative processes that ensure a responsive and effective Student Support service, including collaborating and conducting discussions with students, staff, parents/carers, and community members. The successful applicant will ideally have a vibrant personality, be highly motivated, enjoy working with young people, flexible, reliable and have a high degree of resilience as student services is a fast-paced and complex environment.

You should provide a high level of customer service in all matters of student services as required, in a timely and efficient manner. As a member of the Student Services team, you work across year groups, with teaching and support staff to triage students to prioritise issues and concerns. You will ideally take charge to lead wellbeing programs and actively support and participate in key student health and wellbeing programs, such as R U Ok Day, Harmony Day etc, throughout the year.

Gilmore College is an Independent Public School which opened in 2008, continuing 52 previous years of secondary education provided by Kwinana Senior High School. The school continues the education of students from within the City of Kwinana area primary schools. This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as successful during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be successful for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work-related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Good oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships.
  • Effective planning and organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities within timelines.
  • Good research, conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to identify problems and provide solutions.
  • Skills and experience in working with individual or small groups of students experiencing difficulties.
  • Knowledge of the youth sector, particularly local organisations and services.

Eligibility and training requirements

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment;
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement;
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
