About Your Role
You have a good sense of adventure and are willing to try new things. We’re looking for open-minded leaders who take a systematic approach to their work, have strong critical thinking skills and are passionate.
Suicide PreventionPeer Workers employed in the Safe Haven and Suicide Prevention Outreach Team (SPOT) services will provide recovery-oriented and trauma-informed peer support for people who present to the service. Drawing on lived experience, support may include psychosocial support, safety planning, recovery/wellness planning, individual or group peer support, advocacy, collaborative identification of community support, follow up and support to access other services.
Peer workers may also be required to work from or liaise with emergency departments to ensure people in distress are successfully linked to the service and that emergency department staff have a high awareness of the service. Peer workers will deliver support that aligns with the principles of step up/step down care. This includes making referrals to a range of community-based services for ongoing support if required (step down), or escalating concerns over consumer wellbeing to clinical staff/management within the Safe Haven and/or SPOT for follow up (step up).
The Safe Haven provides support to people who present to the service experiencing a suicidal crisis or suicidal thinking. It will provide an alternative to an emergency department presentation or to remaining in emergency unnecessarily. The Safe Haven service aims to promote a no wrong door approach. For many people experiencing a suicidal crisis, emergency departments are the most immediately accessed or only form of support. However, busy emergency departments are not ideal locations for people who are in psychological distress.
The Safe Haven service will provide people with appropriate and immediate support nearby to emergency departments, where rapid and compassionate care can be provided by mental health clinicians and Peer Workers in a non-clinical environment. The Suicide Prevention Outreach team (SPOT), consisting of clinicians and Peer Workers, provide afterhours care and follow-up to people who are experiencing or recovering from suicidal distress.
The service operates 5 days per week from Thursday to Monday from 1:30PM – 10:00PM with a potential of extending to a 7 day service. After hours, evenings and weekend work will be a requirement of the role.
