The Central Coast Local Health District (CCLHD) is seeking dedicated individuals to join our Alternatives to Emergency Departments (Safe Haven) Service as Health Education Officers.About You

  • You have Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work (Consumer), or will attain successful completion of Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work (Carer) within 18 months of commencing position.
  • You have your own personal lived experience of suicidal crisis, mental distress and recovery, and ability to meaningfully and purposefully use lived experience to provide peer support to consumers.
  • You have the ability to work effectively across community, inpatient, emergency department and related settings including demonstrated effective negotiation and communication skills.
Where you’ll be workingThe Central Coast Local Health District (CCLHD) Alternatives to Emergency Departments (Safe Haven) Service is a key part of the NSW Government’s 'Towards Zero Suicides' initiatives. The program provides support for consumers who present to the service in acute psychological distress and suicidal crisis in a safe non-clinical space (Safe Haven) staffed by Peer Workers as an alternative to an emergency department presentation.The service actively works to provide a welcoming and supportive alternative to emergency department care, utilising the expertise of Peer Workers and clinicians as part of a multi-disciplinary team. The approach includes the provision of referral and information about a wide range of other community based services such as housing, relationship counselling or financial assistance, to help address the causes of distress.The service offers hope to consumers who present in suicidal crisis and psychological distress, facilitates contact with people who have a personal lived experience of recovery and first hand experience in wellbeing management. The Peer Workers will provide recovery-oriented and trauma-informed peer support for consumers who present to the service. Support may include recovery/wellness planning, individual or group peer support, facilitating therapeutic group programs, advocacy, collaborative identification of community supports and follow up.The role is based across both Gosford and Wyong Hospital Safe Haven sites, working Monday to Friday - occasional weekend shifts may be required.
