Position at Sydney Veterinary Emergency & Specialists
Sydney Veterinary Emergency and Specialists are looking for an experience and highly motivated Surgery nurse to join our team. Working in an extremely dynamic and versatile department, our new Surgery Nurse is required to be able to work extremely well within a team, understand the processes of a Specialty Department working in an extremely busy Emergency and Critical care clinic. A successful applicant comes with all the necessary skills and attributes for a Surgery department but is willing to learn and looking for new challenges within their career.
At Sydney Veterinary Emergency & Specialists, we provide emergency consultations through to specialist radiography and imaging, medicine, surgery, dentistry and dermatology. All specialist procedures are overseen by veterinary anaesthetists for added peace of mind.
We work closely with many local animal hospitals in Sydney and strive to complement these partner services to be an extension of the care provided by your local family veterinary clinic.
Our equipment includes:
- Separate consult rooms, treatment areas and wards for dogs and cats
- Gold ISFM Accredited Cat Friendly Clinic
- Soft tissue and orthopaedic surgical suites
- 16 slice CT, Digital Radiography, Ultrasound, Endoscopy, Fluoroscopy
- Full in-house IDEXX pathology
- Ventilators and blood bank for critical patients
The position involves but is not limited to:
- Triage of emergency medicine patients
- Responsible for organising and assisting with procedures on medicine patients
- Assistance in oncology procedures
- Skilled to perform anaesthesia on a range of patients from paediatric to geriatric patients and often critically ill patients for short or long procedures.
- Placement of IV catheters, phlebotomy, performing radiographs of diagnostic quality, intensive care and monitoring, pre and post-operative patient care.
- Work directly with specialists and emergency clinicians to ensure that the patient, clients, clinicians and team are all attended to and working in sync.
- Client communication – providing advice, answering questions and soothing client fears about the status of their pet.
- Cleaning – while we have a fantastic animal attendant team, the nurses still need to help to keep the hospital clean and tidy.
- The position includes ongoing education allowances, including assessing to various online training opportunities.
- Regular nurse meetings.
About You
- You must be fluent in English and have excellent communication skills (both written and oral)
- Display professionalism, empathy and excellent customer service and care.
- Love’s animals and respects clients
- Great time management skills
- Must have a current Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing plus at least 2 years of employment experience or demonstrate equivalent on-the-job experience of at least 4 years. For medicine nurse positions, experience in specialist/ referral practice is highly desirable but not essential.
- Previous Surgery nurse experience desired
