Derby District High School (DHS) is seeking a English - Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) Teacher to join their high-quality regional school.

Teachers and school administrators employed at Derby District High School  in 2024 are eligible to receive an Attraction and Retention Incentive of $10 000 (pa, gross – to be adjusted pro rata for FTE and tenure). Eligible staff will receive a percentage of this payment on commencement at the school, with the remainder paid at the end of the school year. Staff must remain employed in the location until the end of the school year to be eligible to receive the second payment.  

The ARI payment is in addition to other incentives that may apply in this school.

About the Role

This role will suit applicants who are energetic, highly motivated and passionate about education. You will have the opportunity to teach in a unique context where On Country learning and two way lesson delivery with your Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer (AIEO) staff is highly encouraged. This is learning done differently. This role requires the ability to develop and maintain high expectations relationships.

The Ideal Teacher

The successful applicant will ideally have the capacity to provide engaging, relevant, and meaningful learning experiences. You should possess the ability to create positive and respectful relationships with students. Having a good sense of fun and adventure is critical.

The successful applicant will ideally have the capacity to teach the English and HASS curriculum competently to students from Year 7 to 12 depending on the school timetable. Ideally, you will be highly organised, have excellent interpersonal skills and possess the ability to work individually and in a team. A high level of effective classroom management and an understanding of the Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) framework will be highly regarded.

The Location and Community

Derby DHS is located in Derby which is situated at the southern end of King Sound in the Kimberley region of Western Australian. Derby is 220km east of Broome by road and is 2463km north of Perth. It was the first town settled in the Kimberley. Derby is well supported with a range of government infrastructures. Its location near the King Sound and a number of rivers provides for many boating and fishing recreational activities - but not swimming!

ELIGIBILITY

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • meet the Department of Education Teacher Qualifications and Registration requirements;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement; and
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
