Balga Senior High School Context

Balga Senior High School, an Independent Public School, is a unique secondary school in Western Australia. Identified as a Distinctive School and a finalist in WA Premier’s Excellence in Aboriginal Education, the school enrols students in a diverse range of specialist programs. These programs have been established specifically to cater for students who, because of their life circumstances, are at considerable educational risk. With a strong focus on the wellbeing of each student, the school specialises in intensive teaching for literacy and numeracy; is culturally diverse and aware of students’ cultural needs; offers a supportive learning environment; and assists students with personal development.

Balga SHS has adopted the Berry Street Education Model (BSEM). BSEM is a Trauma-Informed Positive Education (TIPE) initiative (Brunzell and Norrish, 2021), a strength-based approach designed to inform and guide teacher practice and student learning, engagement, and psychosocial functioning. By integrating clinical, educational, and welfare approaches and perspectives, the BSEM aims to expand the possibilities of teaching and learning within schools to address the needs of vulnerable and at-risk students who have experienced various forms of trauma.

Balga Senior High School prides itself on its diverse multicultural environment with the vast number of our student population representing over 45 nations. To support student development and needs the school has the following programs in place:

Intensive English Centre (IEC): The majority of students are Humanitarian Entrance (mainly refugees or asylum seekers). Many have had no prior schooling in any language – entering education for the first time as teenagers.

Working across the school, the Learning Support Program caters for identified students across all year levels. Students have Individual Education Support Plans (IESP) encompassing educational, social, and behavioural objectives.

The Middle School Program (Years 7 – 10) includes a combination of local area students; Intensive English Centre graduates (primary and secondary); and students engaged in the Wadjak Educational Sports Program. The Middle School also has diverse educational offerings ranging from the more traditional Western Australian Curriculum classes through to specialised streamed classes for students with significant learning needs. The Wadjak Education Program seeks to enrich the educational experiences and outcomes of Aboriginal Students in the North Metropolitan Region as the conduit to engagement and achievement.

The Senior School Program caters for students in Years 11 – 12; most of whom have completed programs in Middle School, Learning Support, or the IEC. Students can engage in a range of learning programs including ATAR, General, Foundation and VET courses leading to WACE achievement. Other Senior School flexibilities include the ability to complete senior schooling over three years, part time attendance for some students (such as young parents) and a direct entry University Preparation Course offered in partnership with Edith Cowan University.

Balga Senior High School is also a member of the New North Education Initiative (NNEI), a collaborative partnership between Dianella Secondary College, Balga, Eastern Hills, Girrawheen, and Morley Senior High Schools. Through the partnership, students have access to a wider breadth of senior school curriculum choices with specialist teachers. Students remain attached to their home school campus and attend a host school for a selected course.
