The Department of Education Instrumental Music Program was established by the Department of Education in Queensland state schools in 1971. The program now boasts more than 500 Instrumental Music teachers teaching in excess of 60,000 students across the State.
Educators and music industry professionals regard the Instrumental Music Program in Queensland as the finest and most extensive in the country. It is internationally recognised as a leader in the field of Instrumental Music education.
The program and its dedicated teaching staff are highly valued by the Department of Education and enjoy enormous support from the wider community.
The Queensland Instrumental Music Program is an ensemble program in which students learn orchestral or band instruments. Students have two lessons per week, one in a large ensemble and one in a small group.
Teachers implement the department's Instrumental Music curriculum (PDF, 481KB). Students in Years 11 and 12 may gain QCE credits for successful progress through the Curriculum. Instrumental Teachers are usually itinerant, and work across a cluster of schools, directing ensembles and teaching mixed instrument groups.
For permanent appointment an applicant needs appropriate degrees in music and in teaching.

- Current full registration or current provisional registration with eligibility for full registration, as a teacher in Queensland. - Employment for pre-service/graduate teachers will be subject to the successful completion of a relevant teaching qualification and meeting the minimum requirements as a teacher with the department
